Here's another enduring testimonial:

"Dr. Henke's success as an independent management consultant comes as no surprise to me. His business and operational strengths were very apparent even in the early SDRC years, where we worked side by side for over a decade. I had the pleasure to report to and learn from Russ Henke during years together at SDRC, specifically as I managed consulting groups and field subsidiaries. Russ is an especially strong operational executive and I benefited significantly working under his guidance.”

Here's an anecdote of interest:

"The excellent working relationship between Dr. Russ Henke and me goes back to 1974, when I first joined SDRC. Russ had already been at SDRC for five years and was COO at the time I joined. We worked closely together at SDRC till 1982, and then again at Schlumberger Applicon in Boston from 1982 to 1984. I reported to Russ at Applicon as Director of Marketing, where I supervised 60 employees in electronics, mechanical, manufacturing and AEC marketing. After 1984, we both went on to different start-up companies."

And we heard from "Rebel Country":

"Having recently entered the consulting business myself on the east coast of the USA, I am delighted to be able to align with Dr. Russ Henke of HENKE ASSOCIATES in the west. This gives Russ and me a chance to work together again on selected projects, just like we used to at SDRC and also when Russ was a Board Member at MacNeal Schwendler."

And another endorsement:

"I have very fond memories of my 6 years at Mentor Graphics Corporation – most of them under Dr. Henke’s leadership. I always admired his no-nonsense management style and appreciated the new innovative ways in which he let many of the guys including myself develop leadership skills even when it was virtually impossible to promote all of the talented people at Mentor into management positions. The great thing about working with him was that he was both fun to work with as well as a great coach. I am glad to see that he is continuing to succeed as an independent management consultant."

And still another endorsement:

"Dr. Henke's outstanding resume speaks for itself. What it doesn't tell you is that his approach to business and working with people extracts more productivity and dedication from employees than any business leader I have ever had the opportunity to work with. Dr. Henke is extremely demanding, yet reasonable and pragmatic - with nothing but the highest standards for business ethics. He is equally strong at working strategic or operational issues. Any organization, public or private, small or large, would be fortunate to have Dr. Henke as an executive, advisor or board member."

Top qualities: Great Results, High Integrity, Creative

“I worked very closely with Dr. Russ Henke during his tenure as interim General Manager of SILMA, a division of Adept Technology. His technical depth and breadth, personal and professional discipline, business acumen, and team building skills are very strong. Russ can coax the best out of a team, challenge status quo, inspire change, and in the end deliver new technologies and products to the marketplace. At SILMA, Russ focused the SILMA team to develop and then successfully execute a new business plan in a very short period of time. Out of that business plan came two new CAM products for Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) for the Quality Industry. Now more than a decade later, the underlying technology and user interface for these products continue to be successful and state-of-the-art even after SILMA was acquired. Dr. Henke's direct contribution was in the form of leadership, focus, and technical synthesis that ultimately drove the organization to hit a critical window of opportunity and succeed. It was Russ’ good judgment, bottom-line business focus, and powerful communication skills that helped SILMA accomplish this in just 18 intense months. I heartily recommend Russ Henke in a management capacity or his services as a business consultant, and would gladly work with Russ again.” December 3, 2009

From the MidWest:

"I have known Dr. Russ Henke since 1970, in connection with my professional experience at SDRC, Gould Electronics, IBM and as Chairman of the SAE, Computer Applications Committee. Dr. Henke has made many distinguished contributions to the engineering profession in the United States over a sustained period of multiple decades as teaching professor, business executive and professional consultant. In every instance, Dr. Henke has directly influenced worldwide mechanical and electrical design automation methods and practices. Further, his indirect influence on the state-of-the-art in mechanical engineering has been even greater as author, publisher, and speaker on many foundational topics dealing with advanced engineering technologies and tools which are now widely accepted and used in the engineering design community. He has done this while simultaneously contributing his time and energy to many professional engineering associations including ASME, SME and the IEEE, in every city where his career has taken him. In addition, Russ has worked with numerous charitable organizations in his community such as Junior Achievement and The Special Olympics. He has been recognized formally as a Distinguished Alumnus in 1989 by his (and my) alma mater (The University of Cincinnati) as well as by being named a Fellow of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and most recently, as a Fellow of ASME. Above and beyond his professional accomplishments, Russ has spent much of the last decade working with start up companies on a purely pro bono basis, helping fledgling entrepreneurs achieve their lifetime ambitions."

“Over the past six years, Russ has made very valuable contributions to Mentor Graphics. Most recently, during his two-year tenure here in Wilsonville, Oregon as Vice President & General Manager of our worldwide Professional Services Division (PSD), Russ was responsible for developing a new strategic plan and building a solid organization of professionals to implement that plan. As a result, 1995 produced record revenue growth and profitability well above plan. During his previous four years as Vice President & GM of the PCB Division based in San Jose, CA, Russ succeeded in establishing the division as a profitable worldwide market share leader. Please join me in thanking Russ for his contributions to MGC over the past six years.”.

Dr. Walden C. (Wally) Rhines (left)

April 1996

------------------------------------------------------

From San Diego, CA:

"I met Russ Henke on my very first day of work as a new employee of SDRC in 1979. Russ was giving a seminar to key SDRC customers in Southern California on the benefits of CAD/CAM/CAE. I was a relatively green engineer, having taught in academia for four years after receiving my Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California. I attended Dr. Henke's seminar as part of my training/orientation, which was a wonderful beginning to a long career at SDRC, especially compared to my expectations of filling out orientation paperwork on my first day of work. I was quite literally inspired by Dr. Henke. His vision of the future of CAD/CAM/CAE, and his ability to communicate that vision, dramatically reinforced the good fortune of my decision to join SDRC. I had joined a company committed to changing the way mechanical engineering was done, lead by a team of people like Dr. Henke with the vision and ability to make it happen. Later I learned about Dr. Henke's passion for balance and ethics in our business and how it was communicated to every employee as a set of specific goals and objectives related to the three fundamental areas of technical and business excellence, and people orientation. I applied what I learned from Russ throughout my 20 year career at SDRC, and later when I spun off a new consulting company (ATA) with a group of my SDRC colleagues. I lost touch with Russ for awhile after he left SDRC, but reconnected with him about 10 years ago to seek advice to help set the strategic direction of our new company. He continues to inspire."

From the Software Language niche:

"I have known Dr. Henke for more than 20 years. In fact, I have had the distinct honor to work for him at three different companies over this period. It gave me first-hand knowledge on his strategic business vision, his operational prowess and his mastery of complex technologies especially in CAD. Dr. Henke was instrumental in bringing forth the first 32-bit CAD/CAM system at Applicon and the first fully integrated solid-based CAD/CAM/CAE system at ATP, both of which are now standard practice in the CAD industry. I was proud to be part of the team in both endeavors under his leadership."

Here's a treasured endorsement:

"I have known Dr. Henke for over forty years (including having been closely associated with him for a significant portion of that time) and have the utmost admiration for his outstanding and innovative contributions to advancement of the capabilities of American industry. From the beginning of his career to the present he has pioneered, over and over again, the creation of unique and singularly effective software systems, processes and management methods for highly cost-effective performance of the total product realization process in industrial organizations. Further, he has continuously devised and instituted creative and imaginative modus operandi for quickly and effectively reducing these uniquely beneficial products to practice in such organizations. As a result of these accomplishments, the capability and cost-effectiveness of American industry is today at a much higher level than it could possibly have been in the absence of Dr. Henke. "

Dr. M. Eugene Merchant
1913 - 2006
Formerly Senior Consultant

Techsolve, Inc.
Cincinnati, OH

(Dr. M. Eugene Merchant began his career in 1936 with a graduate fellowship sponsored by Cincinnati Milacron. Working under Hans Ernst, Milacron's then director of research, Gene started analyzing the nature of friction between the metal-cutting tool and the chip being removed from the work piece by it. Conceived more than 50 years ago, Merchant's thesis work developed a mathematical model of the metal cutting process that is still taught today by universities all over the world. From there, Dr. Merchant moved on to harnessing the power of computers. More than forty years ago, Gene visualized today's computer-integrated manufacturing systems, and thus was a driving force in productivity improvements that have played a major role in creating the standard of living Americans enjoy today. Dr. Merchant is one of only 25 people who have been inducted into the Automation Hall of Fame at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. Every year the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) with the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) has presented an award, that is named after Dr. Merchant, for improving the productivity and efficiency of manufacturing. Dr Merchant worked at Milacron nearly 50 years until he reached the mandatory retirement age of 70, however, he did not retire. Even beyond 90 years young, this mild-mannered scientist still went to work most days as a senior advisor at TechSolve and he still traveled around the world to help manufacturers and the people who work for them. Dr. Merchant has been sorely missed since his passing in 2006).

Send an email to Dr. Henke to find out more about Dr. Merchant & TechSolve.

Another Valued Endorsement:

I am pleased to be the sponsor for Dr. Russell F. Henke as a candidate for the grade of ASME Fellow for ASME International. I have known and worked with Dr. Henke for 17 years and know of his work for the engineering profession and his many contributions to Mechanical Engineering.

Also, I have supplied four additional letters from persons of high reputation who have comprehensive knowledge of Dr. Henke's engineering contributions over the years. I personally know each of these sponsors and feel that they can accurately judge, from personal experience, Dr. Henke's qualifications.

I have been an ASME member since I was a student at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC where I joined the ASME student section in 1949. I served as student section secretary, treasurer, vice chairman and chairman for both my junior and senior years. After graduation, I promptly converted my membership from student member grade to junior member. I served ASME as regional vice president and enjoyed my work with this professional society and have been active throughout my entire career. When I was elected as a Fellow grade, I was quite honored, for I knew the difficult qualifications that must be met to be named an ASME Fellow.

Last year I had the opportunity of serving as our International President of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers with headquarters in Dearborn, MI. During my term in office, I worked closely with Dr. Henke while he was an International Board of Directors member in 2002-2003.

I was also elected a Fellow in the National Society of Professional Engineers and also consider that a distinctive honor.

I am honored to sponsor Dr. Henke for this truly outstanding award and hope that your committee will look favorably upon this candidate.

Here's another important endorsement:

I have known Dr. Henke for over 25 years through my interactions as a customer with SDRC, a company he managed from obscurity to prominence in the CAE field. His, and his colleagues’ pioneering work at SDRC has had vast impact not only on my own career and that of many engineers and scientists in the Automotive and Robotic Industries, but possibly on most industries that exploited the advent of massive digital computing to prosperity and success. Throughout his career Dr. Henke has guided, through his leadership and technical knowledge, a variety of Hi-Tech enterprises towards the introduction and commercialization of a multitude of innovative and successful products. His contributions can be readily recognized at well-known companies such as SDRC/EDS, Gould, and Schlumberger where he contributed materially to their prosperity.

It’s infrequent to see managerial prowess combined with technical proficiency in one individual. This combination enabled Dr. Henke to make such unique contributions to Industry on National and International scales. As a pioneer in the engineering software field Dr. Henke’s vision and innovation have been an enabling instrument that pushed the capabilities of engineers to increasingly higher levels. The result has been enhanced engineering efficiency, product reliability, reduced product cost and improved competitiveness.

Dr. Henke’s accomplishments in the creation and promotion of leading technology innovations and his managerial leadership and contributions to industry are fully harmonious with the highest standards.

From the Northwest:

“I worked for Russ for several years (’94 – ’96) while he was VP & General Manager of the Professional Services Division (PSD) at Mentor Graphics Corporation in Oregon. I was first in PSD marketing and business development and later a PSD Business Unit Manager. Russ' leadership style combined thoroughness with just the right blend of hands on and allowing autonomy. He showed imagination and wasn't afraid to make bold moves. Russ wasn't interested in simply maintaining stewardship. We worked hard together to find creative ways to grow, and under his leadership, his team was successful, growing both organically and through acquisition. Russ has a wealth of senior management experience in high tech companies and I learned a lot from him.”

He uses these skills to ensure that the entire organization is aligned on values, goals, and expected deliverables. Russ demands a lot from his staff and is very supportive in helping everyone achieve aggressive goals. Whenever an issue arises, Russ quickly identifies the issue and works with those involved to create and implement a plan to mitigate the risks. During my career, I always rated my managers by what I learned from them. Based on this rating, Russ has been my number one manager. I learned so much from him in terms of communication (written, verbal), ethics, organization, respect, and loyalty. I still apply every day his work discipline and communication skills. Just before Russ left Mentor, we finally became friends outside of work and our families saw each other many times before I moved back to France.
