Really enjoyed your web site I see where you served on the USS Nueces APB-40. I thought I
would pass along some info just in case you don't have it. The USS Nueces APB-40 served
with the Mobile Riverine Force TF-117 during the Vietnam she was part of the great green fleet YEP she was painted green as were the other ships and boats of TF-117-116. The Nueces and the USS Mercer APB-39 also a part
of the MRF are now both in Sasebo Japan being used a barrack barges. so boats your old
ship is still out there. More on the Green fleet of

Hi Bob,

I believe that I was given a couple of your poems for my Vietnam Pages related to Veteran's Issues, and I didn't know you had a web site.
I'll link the two poems that I have of yours to it. Your poetry is awesome, real, and the feelings are there.
It continues to amaze me of the number of men who write such beautiful poetry, some painful poems, of course, but all of them are still beautiful.
Hidden behind the eyes of soldiers are words and feelings that only they can express. Thank you for creating this site.

Peace & Serenity,

Jausten (Cindy)

I too know what it is like to always be alone.even after all these years. we can never really tell others for fear of being that phony or just a lier or spinner of tall tales. my tale is intact but my heart will never be. this is something we just have to live with,or it may just destroy us. i can think of no one who has experienced what we have who has not thought about ending it. ourt own private hell is exactly what it is. we will survive, and in my dreams i will never give up the search for my lost brothers. keep the faith, my friend.

I am 14 years old and the editor of an online US Troops Support Newsletter called Over N Out. "Over N Out" stands for "Over the Internet and Out to the Troops", and I currently have over 2000 direct e-mail subscribers as well as a web site that my coeditor and I run. My newsletter's primary goal is boosting and maintaining US Troop as well as civilian morale and spirits, and my newsletter contains relevant military history, information, references and support links, military humor, poetry, short stories, quotes, and additionally addresses of troops and military personnel are listed, allowing for my readers that are both military and civilian to write to or send packages to our military personnel. One of my web pages lists addresses to write to troops as well as individual service men and women, and also lists their supporters. I am impressed by your site and would like to add a link to your site on my web page if you approve. Both of my parents are former Marines and my Mom is currently Air Guard Reserve. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Respectfully, Brian JVPitcher7@aol.com, Editor Over N Out US Troops Support Newsletter http://members.aol.com/rsly1977/page2.html

Bos'n, you have a page you can be very proud of. I know that it has taken many hours away from your family, to put it together.

I would like to work with you in the future. My home page is unique, it originated as an Escort Carrier Sailors & Airmen page, but we needed a greater, more honorable objective. What could be greater and more honorable, than trying to help all Navy, Marine, and Air Squadrons personnel, who served from 1941 through the Persian Gulf Conflict, to locate their shipmates and units.

We have done just that, in our new website, at
http://www.escortcarriers.org You have already reviewed our page, and can attest to the fact that it encompasses alot more than just Escort Carriers.Incidently, we have many Gilbert Islands former crew as members of our Escort Carrier Association. I served aboard USS Gambier Bay (CVE-73)

As I stated in my opening statement, you have an excellent home page. Perhaps we can negotiate my borrowing a few of your poems, in the future. Our page was updated greatly on August 22nd 1999. There will be major updates in the very near future. I must work rapidly, with inputs, because my web master, the great nephew of Virgil Cox, a shipmate who abandoned ship with me on October 25, 1944, off Samar, Philippines, is active Navy. He is assigned to a submarine, with I believe six in and six out, months that is. While he is in port, he updates my page. He is OLD NAVY, in the true meaning of the expression, a 4.0 guy. Thanks for allowing me access to your link. You believe as I,
"The best way one can serve ones self, is to serve others."

Your CVE shipmate, Tony

Great Site...I was looking for any information on the Nueces APB-40. My dad passed away in 1954 when I was five years old, and I have just recenely come accross his ships diary and photos of the ship and shipmates from WW2. I was excited to find out that his ship is still active and sitting in the NAVAL SHIP REPAIR FACILITY, YOKOSUKA, JA (NAVSHIPREPFAC). My Dad's name was Perry Donaldson Wise. Would appreciate any contact with someone who might have served with him.

Massachusetts Author Bares His Soul in Memoir on Operation Desert Storm, The Unexpected Storm: The Gulf War Legacy

Massachusetts’ native, Steven Manchester, is proud to announce the release of his new book, The Unexpected Storm: The Gulf War Legacy- just in time for the 10 year anniversary of Operation Desert Storm.

Based on his trying experiences during the Persian Gulf War in 1991, Manchester graphically details life as a U.S. Army M.P. in Iraq. “My perspective of the Gulf War was very different from the sanitized version CNN opted to show,” said Manchester, “up close…we witnessed many children slaughtered by land mines. I’ve always felt people should know how it really was!” Such brutal depictions in this memoir are evidence of the hefty costs associated with freedom and the price paid to heal America from the poltergeist of Vietnam.

Packed with raw emotion, The Unexpected Storm is Manchester’s personal account of his experiences before, during and after the 100 hours of ground fighting in the Middle East. It is a compelling tale of friends made and lost, battles waged on an internal front, and promises broken. Though most soldiers returned home- visibly whole, what they brought with them as a result of experimental vaccines, radioactive depleted uranium and pent-up rage is just beginning to surface. “It was a just cause,” Manchester confirmed, “babies were being tossed from hospital incubators in Kuwait. My only problem is the way our own government has chosen to complete the deal...more treatment is needed!”

Though the book bravely delves into the controversial issue of the Persian Gulf Syndrome, or “Mystery Illness,” Manchester takes the concept of war to a deeply inward and higher level. “Not all war wounds are visible, nor are they all suffered on the battlefield,” said Manchester, “War is a state of mind and a man cannot live in two worlds at one time…eventually, there has to be a truce.”

Steven Manchester is the author of three books of poetry, two novels, and two screenplays, both of which were produced as independent films by Rising Tide Entertainment, Inc. To view these: www.booksmoviesscreenplays.com Under the pen name Steven Herberts, he is also the author of 6-5; A Different Shade of Blue- a tour of modern-day prisons through the eyes of a Correction Officer.

Published by Hellgate Press, The Unexpected Storm is available on-line, in all major bookstores (Jan. 2001) or directly from the publisher by calling 1-800-228-2275.

Good afternoon or Good morning.

Een "mail" uit Nederland van een tot nu nog onbekende.
Ik zal mij eerst eens aan U voorstellen.
Mijn naam is Jos Claessen
Woonachtig in Ermelo.

Thank you for what you did and for what my father did. I am signing my fathers name who was a retired Merchant Marine in WW2 and Viet Nam who just recently died. If he could he would be also telling you thank you and taking his hat off to you to solute you. And I being one of his daughters would also like to say thank you for all that you did. My heart goes out to all the men and women who didn't make it home again, like my next door nieghbor who went to Viet Nam and never came home alive again. And to them I have a special thought and thank you in my heart each and every day of my life.

Thank you commander for keeping the U.S.S. watts (DD-567) alive. I appreciate your efforts and all the work you've done in this regard. I served on the Watts from 1952-1956. The Watts was my mother, father, friend, doctor and teacher for almost four years. Those were the most impressionable years of my life and I loved every minute I spent on that boat, and to this day I miss sailing out of Norfolk and Long Beach harbors. God bless you sir and smooth sailing to you and your family.

Hi, I enjoyed your poems on Carol's site - and found your home page by the link on hers. My husband is retired navy, too - retired in '97, and moved up to Idaho. We've met some cowboys up here - what a different life it's been! My only real experiences with cows are helping a new friend here train and gentle her cows to go to the fair in Boise. It's been a fun education, and now, unexpectedly, I'm helping friends on the local rodeo board put together the program for this year's rodeo coming up. Actually, I'd been looking online for something funny - poem, pictures, stories, anything to enliven the program & keep people leafing through it.... so they might pay more attention to the sponsors ads, really. Anyway - that's how I found you, and I just wanted to take a minute to appreciate you and your efforts. And to thank you for your navy and coast guard service. Such a gift to be proud of, and I salute you. Thanks again - Joy

Ahoy my brother...thank you for signing my guestbook! I enjoyed the journey through your site. Sir, the varied experiences of your life are awe inspiring indeed, as was the thought provoking poetry. As a combat vet who has borne the brunt of our nations actions in Vietnam, bearing freedoms sword, and felt the embarrassment and scorn heaped upon the warriors from that conflict, I salute you for by your writing keeping the spirit alive of service. I invite those who pass here to visit my "Vietnam Picture Tour, from the lens and poet’s pen of a combat infantryman, http://PZZZZ.tripod.com/namtour.html from one who's walked the walk, and can talk the talk...Take a walk in "the park" with the 1st Air Cavalry on combat patrol, that in reality will give you the sweet and sour taste of "the Nam" on your tongue, leave the pungent smell of "the Nam" acrid in your nostrils,
and imbed textures of "the Nam" in your brain as though you were walking beside me in
combat.

I would like to thank you for your site, I have a co-worker who as been called to active duty and tomorrow (8/20) will be his last day until he returns. I wish my name would be called, but I know that call will never come. At his ceremony tomorrow I would like to read your poem "The Call" and offer my name, rank, USAF Pacific Air Forces patch and most importantly my United States Flag pin that I have worn since 9/11. Since I cannot accompany him on his journy, I would him to take a piece of me with him. Your poems brought back memories, tears, sorrow and happiness. THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS THE USA!!!

I signed up at boots in San Diego to go aboard the USS Watts and serve with my brother who was on board from recommissioning (7-51) I went on board 2/14/52 and learned at that time my brother had been transferred to the YOG-32 same as you, so you probably knew him (Forest E. Johnson SK2 at the time) Forrest remained in the Navy for 24 years and retired, and passed away three years ago. I served on the Watts from 52 to 54, what ship and a great crew. Remember the various skippers, exec's, supply & other officers, and of course many of my ship mates, it was great, especially looking back, ha Drop me an e-mail if you get the chance. Joe J.

Thank you Soldier

Have you stopped to thank a veteran today?
For the price of freedom they had to pay?
Did you gaze into those distant eyes?
Did you see the ghosts he can't deny?
Did you think a soldier's heart was made of steel?
Because he was trained to kill, he couldn't feel?
Did you see the guilt written on his face,
For the loss of life he can't replace?
Did you know he mourns the lives he couldn't save,
And walks with comrades in their grave?
Did you remember the boy with innocence lost?
Do you really know war's ultimate cost?
Have you felt the blast of artillery fire?
Do you have the courage it would require?
Have you stood in trenches consumed with fear?
Felt the enemies breath so very near?
Have you walked with God on a battleground?
Seen your brothers dead or dying all around?
Have you stopped to thank a vet today,
Or did you just turn and walk away?
From the pain he'll carry for the rest of his life,
Did you consider his family, his children, his wife?
That watch him suffer in silence each and every day,
As he's haunted by memories that don't go away?
Did you care that the soldier is still pulling guard?
That his heart, mind, and soul will forever be scarred?
Do you know how he suffers from ptsd?
Or that our precious freedom is never free?
Do you care that he still hears the blood curdling screams?
Or that he returns to the war each night in his dreams?
Have you felt the sorrow of a combat vet?
Or would you rather just forget?
That war has pierced his hardened heart,
And torn this soldier all apart?
Would you rather our heroes just fade away?
Or will you stop to thank a vet today?

Dear Bro Bob,
I screwed up on the other one and didn't get my comments included. Want you to know that I'm so glad our paths crossed and you included me as a Brother. God Bless you!

I was looking for some poems to display in the mess hall where I work. I really enjoyed reading the poems. I hope to post them in the mess hall so the marines can read them. I plan to post them during week of the fourth of July. If you have any suggestion concerning my display, please let me know.
Thank you.

We sponsor two major workshops a year and this coming fall, our topic will be "Coming Home: Grieving the Many Wounds of War." Someone made me aware of your wonderful poem, "Wounds of War" and I am writing for your permission to reprint it in our Sept. newsletter. If you agree to let us print it, I can send you copies (if you'll provide a mailing address) and also credit you with information about accessing your website and any other information you might wish us to include. I hope you will permit me to use a few lines I have found in your poems. My father was a WWII POW who just recently passed away. The words you say were the unmentionables in our home. The injustice in his life and passing are very raw and I want to honor him with a small ad for POW/MIA day on Sept 21.
