BOOK INFORMATION

Four errors have been found in the book so far. They are on page 42. The first line on this page shows two dates of 1942. They should both be 1943. The second paragraph shows a date of July 12, 1942. This should be July 12, 1943. Any reference to CRS should be COLD ROLLED STEEL not CORROSION RESISTANT STEEL.

According to an article by  David Truby, the Deer Gun was designed by Russell J. Moure, Chief Engineer for American Machine  & Foundry's Special Firearms Division, at the request of  the CIA. His mission was to design a replacement for the Liberator Pistol. The cost of the pistol was to be under $4.00. After examining Moure's prototype the CIA ordered 1,000 pistols and gave AMF a development contract for $300,000.00. The article says only 1000 pistols were made in the 1962-1963 time frame. This puts the cost at $300.00 each. Moure said that if they had received additional contracts  the cost could have been $3.95 each. There are two possible reasons in the article for the name Deer Gun. One does not check out and the other is an opinion, made by an individual. It has been estimated by Keith Melton that about 15 to 20 of these pistols have survived. In my limited research I have found 5 and feel there are more than 20. One that I found does not have the serrations on the grip and has a black color.

An interesting article came out in the September/October 1998 issue of the BIG Show Journal dealing with the Liberator Pistol. The article was written by Charles E. Snyder, Jr., Major, USAF (Retired). He has a Liberator pistol with Chinese markings on the grip. They translate "43" "October" and an unindentified mark of probably a local area or agency. Weather stations were established in China to forecast the weather over Japan. These stations were very active in forecasting weather for bombing runs over various parts of Japan.  Major Snyder has some documentation that this pistol was issued to one of these units. Major Snyder writes: "It is ironic that the US Military's least expensive piece of ordnance would play a roll in the delivery of the most expensive piece of ordnance of the Second World War" (The Atomic Bomb).
