We have a chess club at R. L. Stevens School for 4th, 5th and 6th graders.
They are called the "Dolphin Kings." There are about 50 kids in our chess
club. Mrs. Huffstutter our librarian, runs the chess club. She has been
doing it for 10 years. We have a new chess teacher this year. His name
is Mr. Dennis Yarnell.
We really like him. He explains everything so that we understand
it.
Every Thursday we meet at lunch in the library. We also can come before
school every day to play chess and sometimes at recess.
This
year in 2004 the President of our chess club isParik
T. . Ricardo
M. is the vice president. The duty of the President and Vice President
is to organize other tournaments.
We also have a ladder tournament. Our ladder tournament is 4
months long and has about 40 people participating. Each participant's slot
on the ladder is chosen at random. Once they know their number they can
challenge somebody 1 or 2 slots ahead of them. If the challenger wins then
they both switch places, if the person that was challenged wins they both
stay the same. The object is to get to the top of the ladder as fast as
you can. The top ten people in the ladder tournament at the end, get a
prize.
Our very last tournament is the quad tournament. In our quad tournament, four chess club members compete in one match against each player. Who ever has the most victories once everybody in the group plays each other is the champion of the group. If two people tie then they play each other again.
If all this sounds like a lot of
fun, that's because, it is!
