Reif/Shaffer Architects was founded by Carol Reif and Thad Shaffer in 1997. The firm specializes in institutional buildings and housing. We are experienced and adept in designing at all scales of the project environment, from the smallest elements of built-in furnishings to the larger elements of master and site planning. We have designed both for the public and private sectors: master plans, renovations, and remodels of schools, community centers and playgrounds; new construction of gymnasiums and multipurpose rooms. Our built work also includes new construction and/or remodeling of multi-family housing, homes, hotels, offices and retail establishments.
While the firm has a design philosophy which is expressed in each of our projects, our intention is to make buildings which celebrate order, structure, light and connection. This philosophy does not generate a particular style, but rather creates a harmonious spatial ordering of elements. All aspects of a project (from one special room to an entire school) are made to enhance the essential nature of the building.
RSA maintains a small office of four to six individuals (dependent upon the office’s work load) which approaches the practice of architecture with the goal of helping organizations and people to realize a better environment for themselves. We strive to create places with a special, spirited feel, which maintain a sense of appropriateness. Throughout the design and construction process, the firm seeks and welcomes the participation of its clients, be they institutions, developers or individuals. We are dedicated to high level of client service, design excellence and conscientious responses to budgets, schedules and our clients’ special needs. We believe that RSA’s structure has a unique advantage by bringing the experience of a large firm (each principle has more than 28 years experience, much of it in larger firms) and the personal service and project focus of a small firm.
