Oakes Children's Center
San Francisco, CA.

This non-public school for developmentally disabled children had outgrown its current facility located in a landmark firehouse building in San Francisco.  The school looked to renovate the interior of this building, and to add additional spaces to accommodate their growing program needs.

Design development studies focused on accommodation of the requirements of the program, the special needs of the students and staff, and the context of this San Francisco neighborhood.  The resulting solutions meet the challenge of incorporating a historic structure with a contemporary building.

Work included improvements to the 6,000 sf. landmark building for a new auditorium/after school room and therapy spaces, as well as the construction of a new 8,000 sf. building on the adjacent lot to house 4 large classrooms, administrative and teacher support spaces. The project would have been phased such that work on each building will be completed separately and consecutively, with the new building completed first, followed by the renovation of the landmark building. This approach would allow the program to be fully functional throughout construction.

The project successfully completed the City of San Francisco Planning process for Conditional Uses and Variances.  The project is on hold pending financing.
