While at EHDD, Ms. Reif worked with principal Joseph Esherick on the design and construction documents of a vacation house for four generations of one family, who use it in various combinations of people at many different times of the year.

The home sits at the oceanÕs edge and takes full advantage of its site for vistas of the water. The siteÕs minor slope helps to create separations for privacy, a level in access for an elderly grandmother and play/sleeping lofts for the young children. The living and dining rooms accommodate up to 10 easily, yet are comfortable when only two people are staying on vacation.

The extensive social gatherings of this family are accommodated during summer fog by various decks and windbreaks, and during winter rains by cozy window seats near the fireplace. Outdoor exploration is encouraged: an outdoor shower allows beach sand to be washed off before re-entering the living spaces.

The architectural style of the house is partially mandated by the Sea Ranch Design Guidelines, and enriched through Mr. EsherickÕs (one of the original designers of the Sea Ranch community) design aesthetic.
