Pector / Coppock Residence
Oakland, CA
This new home in
the Oakland Hills was built in 1997 for a young and lively family. The
informal arrangement of rooms suits the casual entertaining and living
style of the family. Extensive conversations with the clients lead to
a design solution which will grow and change as the needs of the family
change over time. Consideration was also given to the requirements (current
and future) of elderly and disabled grandparents.
Kitchen counters
were widened to accommodate craft and homework projects within easy
reach of a cooking parent. Large glazed doors lead to decks front and
back, inviting outdoor play and garden enjoyment. The attention to the
transition of interior and exterior is an important element to our work.
Traditional Bay region design elements of trellises, cedar shingles
and gable roofs are incorporated in the design. Sierra granite is used
at the fireplace design to recall summers spent in camp near Yosemite.
An additional deck
from the Master suite overlooks the gardens while capturing Bay views.
A window seat within the suite is a comfortable place to read and view
the Bay. The sewing room/office is next to the dressing area with its
back-to-back doublewide dressers providing layout space for the sewing
projects. A full office suite with additional Bay and garden views is
also located on the second floor. Though two small girls now share a
large bedroom/play area, thought was given to a future dividing wall
(blocking, electrical, doorway framing) for the time when sharing a
room was no longer desirable.
