| It was Memorial Day weekend and we didn't have any plans. We decided to take a ride in the T-Bird but didn't want to get caught up in holiday traffic. So after looking at the map and figuring out the route that would take us in the opposite direction of the homeward bound travelers, we headed off for The Marin Headlands. | |
| No Thunderbird Tour would
be complete without a shot of the car.
I never get tired of looking at it (or driving it). |
| I had no idea The Marin
Headlands was so rich in military history. There are several of these batteries
dispersed around the area.
There seems to be some confusion about the spelling of Mendel. |
|
| This is the view of The Golden Gate from what appears to be a lookout tower. It had openings like this on three sides and stairs leading up from the rear. |
| This is Point Bonita. The
lighthouse can be seen on the bluff at the lower right.
You can see the breakers at Ocean Beach in the distance on the south side of the entrance to The Golden Gate. |
| We could see this
container ship coming in from quite a way out.
It is probably heading for The Port of Oakland, a very busy place. |
| This pine tree reminds me
of The Lone Cypress on the coast near Carmel.
The wind has had a profound effect on its shape. |
| Down below is Sausalito
Beach. It didn't look very crowded for Memorial Day. Probably a little too
far out of the way for your average beach-goer. I didn't even know it was
there.
Beautiful scenery abounds in every direction. |
| My wife said she'd let me out if I agreed to let her drive home. | |
| So I did. |
