Gaiana Mndoian was born in Erevan, Armenia. She graduated from, and later taught at the post-graduate level at, the prestigious Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow under the direction of Mstislav Rostropovich and Natalia Shahovskaya. She also directed the cello program of a school affiliated with the Conservatory at which she created a twenty-three member ensemble of young cello virtuosos, who presented programs at the Great Hall of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory.
Her students have performed at the Bolshoi Concert Hall, and have gone on to gain positions in major orchestras throughout the world; including most recently the Los Angeles Philharmonic. One of her Moscow students, Denis Shapovalov, won first place at the Tchaikovsky cello competition in 1998. From 1981 to 1985 Miss Mndoian was invited to give international cello seminars in France.
Audiences in Europe, the United States, Japan, Mexico and Costa Rica have marveled at her magnificent interpretations of the cello literature. She is much admired by all the students who have taken her master classes. In 1990, she came to Mexico city as part of a famous Russian ensemble called "The Quarteto de Msocu" which was invited by Maestro Fernando Lozano, director of the National Philharmonic of Mexico. During her stay in Mexico Miss Mndoian taught young virtuosos at the School for Perfection of Life and Movement.
In 1994, she recorded a CD for cell and piano with Silvia Navarrete, which included works by Ponce, Alfonso de Elias, Schumann, Beethoven, and Nardini. In 1998, Miss Mndoian toured Japan as part of the L'Amoroso String Quartet. For the past three years, she was invited as a judge to the International Young Artists competition, in San Diego, California. She is fluent in Russian, Armenian, English, and Spanish.
