RUBY RUDMAN
Hey everyone! I was fortunate enough to get interviewed on local radio talk show "Good Morning Monterey Bay" with Rosemary Chalmers. Rosemary made it possible for me to sing a few original tunes on her show last September. I mentioned in the interview that I would be starting on a solo CD project featuring all original music. Now granted, this may take a while to complete, and I'm being optimistic about saying I'd like to have a CD release party probably in 2004. Stay tuned for updates on this project.
In meanwhile -- I'm doing some gigs with Wendy R with our new fun band -- BARBIES IN JAIL. We played a few starter gigs just for fun and to see if we all could collaborate and voila! It was fabuloso! Roger "The Hit Man" Anderson helped us with drums and Vic "the Trick" Revere grooved me with his bass. You can catch us live at The Baja Cantina, Carmel Valley Road, Carmel Valley, CA on July 12, 2003 == 8:30 to 11:30. We'll be doing some of our originals with this group. Call 831-724-4433 for further information.
RUBY'S SONGWRITING HISTORY -- A CHRONOLOGY
RUBY RUDMAN plays electric/acoustic keyboards and guitar. She has written many bluesy / jazzy original tunes over the years. Back in hometown Chicago around the late 60s, Ruby performed as a solo guitar/singer at the now famous blues club THE KINGSTON MINES, and the legendary folk club THE EARL OF OLD TOWN.
In San Francisco in the late 60s early 70s, THE COFFEE GALLERY in North Beach was hangout No. 1 for any aspiring songwriter. After a bunch of years on the road with Top-40 bands (grueling 4 hours a night 6-nights a week touring schedule), the writing style became more sophisticated.
On numerous trips to Europe and Africa, she showcased her tunes at clubs in Amsterdam, London, Paris, Rome, Munich, Copenhagen, Cairo, Athens, Santorini (Greek islands), Barcelona, Lucerne, Florence, etc.
During the 1970s she hooked up with an all-girl funk band BROAD DAYLIGHT in Los Angeles (pre-Runaways and Go-gos). (See link to Kacey Jones below, former leader and member of Broad Daylight now in Nashville who just released an album with Delbert McClinton) These fab gals toured all over the western United States until their breakup.
In the late 70s and 80s when she wasn't touring with a top-40 band, Ruby's home base was Santa Cruz where she was regular at Zelda's, 2121, Pasatiempo, The Grapesteak. Joining forces with Bob Hathaway, they formed the dynamic duo -- THE RUBY AND BOB SHOW -- this duo opened for Stephen Stills at the Catalyst. Ruby also was a featured singer in the opening act for Lee Rittenaur at THE SADDLE RACK in San Jose.
Late 1980s she spent a year in New York performing as a jazz vocalist with groups and as a solo artist. After moving to Los Angeles in the 1990s, Ruby collaborated with many other musicians and was part of THE BREAKAWAY crowd, in Mar Vista (West Los Angeles). She hooked up with guitarist Bill Luke who solicited her talents and they formed "an authentic blues band" called TRUE BLUE. Together she and Luke went into the studio, collaborated on an album's worth of killer blues tunes and layed down some tracks.
Currently in the millenium, Ruby has been performing live with The Robin Anderson Big Band at jazz festivals and clubs in and around the San Francisco Bay Area. She became involved with the Jazz Society of Santa Cruz County in 2002 and put together a new jazz quintet called "The R Factor" headlining the 2002/2003 New Year's Eve Bash at Bocci's Cellar in Santa Cruz.
In 2003, the plan is a solo project (untitled as of yet). Rudman says "my idea is to record each tune in a different studio with different players on each tune. Collaborating and experimenting with different players opens up a whole new spectrum of sounds and ideas."
Rudman is currently on the Board of Directors for the Jazz Society of Santa Cruz. This organization is a nonprofit and hosts a weekly jam session on Sundays from 3:00-7:00 at Bocci's Center, 140 Encinal Street, Santa Cruz, California. Visit JSSCC's website on the link below.
