ROBIN ANDERSON has been playing trumpet with the Cabrillo Big Band for the past several years. He just finished Carbillo Stage's production of Guys & Dolls, under the direction of Jon Nordgren. One of Robin's students, Nick, is the Kuumbwa Honors Band. See him on local cable station Musician's Weekly. Cabrillo has several concerts throughout the school year, in which Robin has been featured. These concerts are a special treat with highly respected guest jazz artists who. A lot of the tunes are pretty complicated charts which shows that not all big bands are just swing dance machines. Check local listings for upcoming concerts.

GALAXY OF SWING -- Ruby and Robin's 7 piece small big band

We were hired to play up at Mt. Hermon Conference Center in August 2003. The young kids were very enthusiastic about the band, the swing music theme, and were jump, jivin' and wailing all over the place. Coincidentally, the Conference Center's mock jazz club is called "The Galaxy Club" so we had our pictures taken below the marquis.

PAST EVENTS AND OTHER TIDBITS OF INTEREST: RABB PLAYS BOCCI'S CELLAR, SANTA CRUZ, CALIFORNIA

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 30, 2005 -- THE LAS VEGAS HORNS PUNCHES BARBIES IN JAIL!!! Robin Anderson, David "Heavy D" Gonzalez on saxophone, and Michael McPheeters on trumpet backed up the Barbies in Jail Band at Don Quixote's. What a great gig it was. See link to the Barbies below for more details.

RABB AT BOCCI'S AUGUST 21, 2005 FROM 1:00 TO 4:00 P.M. This time no guest singers appeared so it was pure RABB with Ruby Rudman singing all your favorite songs. The dance floor gets bigger every time we play. Roger Barnes has created a complete new bar in the back patio as well. Sorry Bocci Ball players -- the big band has taken over your

RABB @ BOCCI'S ON MOTHER'S DAY!!! MAY 8, 2005 1:00 P.M. TO 4:00 P.M. RUBY RUDMAN's illustrious guest singers LISA LEUSCHNER (Season 3 American Idol) and CASSIE RIDGWAY Vocalist from Pacific Collegiate Jazz Band, delighted the crowd with their young talented voices. Cassie sang ALL OF ME, the tune she reprised while visiting Russia last summer with her class. We wish Cassie luck as she moves up to Oregon to attend college. LISA knocked us out with her rendition of FEVER, and then EVERY DAY I HAVE THE BLUES. Not many singers can rise above the cresting peak of a big band, but LiSA was soaring above RABB's powerful sound with ease. We hope to see her again soon.

August 29, 2004

RABB and Ruby had a wonderful time at Bocci's Cellar on August 29, 2004. The band set up on the actual Bocci Ball courts -- the owner Roger Barnes had special wooden planks made to fit over the courts -- and we all set up. On hand was photographer (Santa Cruz's one and only "paparazzo") Ron from Photografiti who took some pictures of us in action. I think the guys look better at night time. You should send me an email and let me know what you think -- or sign our guestbook with your comments. It was rather early on a Sunday afternoon (1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.) so maybe a few of the guys had a late Saturday night gig that kept them from their beauty sleep!

You can check out some photographs from that day at the photographer's website: http://www.photografiti.net to get your own bird's eye view of the day.

RON KAPLAN of the Jazz Ambassadors was on hand as he sang for tbe first time ever with a big band. His debut tune was "Everyday I have the Blues." I warned him it would be LOUD and there was a lot of "hot air" coming out from the horn section (12 of them!!), but he stepped up to the plate and sang a home run. Good job, Ron.

We were also very fortunate to have Adam Charp (a great jazz bass player himself) available that day to record all three sets. RABB is currently in the process of editing the three sets down to make a new live album called "RABB -- LIVE AT BOCCI'S". The vocals weren't as crisp as I would have liked, so there will be a minimum of those and we'll focus on the instrumentals that were performed that day. If you are interested in purchasing a copy of this CD, it should be ready some time in December (just in time for Christmas!). Please call Ruby Rudman at 831-724-4433 to purchase your copy. GEEZER EVENT -- GEEZER WEEK -- APRIL 19-26, 2003 - LOUDEN NELSON CENTER -- BOCCI'S CELLAR

The Jazz Society of Santa Cruz County hosted the Geezer Event at our regular jazz jam venue -- Bocci's Cellar. It was originally supposed to be held at the Catalyst, however, we were pre-empted by a Mexican band's sound check! But Oh! We did have fun on Saturday, April 26, 2003 at 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. Honorees DON McCASLIN, RED MALONE, and RALSTON BROWN were all in attendance and man, were they "stylin'". The week started at Louden Nelson Center April 19, 2003 and runs through 4/26/03. A historical and pictorial presentation will be assembled and can be viewed all week long at the center. JSSCC's event will be held at the Catalyst and is mostly a musical event with all musicians from far and wide gathering to roast and celebrate these senior musicians. The Mayor of Santa Cruz was there to present all three with a plaque. Ruby contacted Jim McFarlin, the photographer and artist who created the mural of Don McCaslin, Wayne Goodwin, Franco and many others who used to hang out and play at the Cooper House. The mural was destroyed by later owners of the Cooper House and it was torn down and carted away to the dump. There were musicians from that era attending from all over California and all had a wonderful time. The event (as all events for the Society) was video taped. You will be able to rent the tape for a small fee and check out the action.

VALENTINE'S DINNER & DANCE FEBRUARY 14, 2003 was a rousing success. Rachel Nelson did a fabulous job on her debut as a big band singer and her whole family was there to cheer her on. The Codigas (friends of Ruby) were there as well.

Dinner was good and the music was fantastic. We wrapped everything up around 11:00 p.m. and the owners Ernest & Jo Brooks promise they'll have us back in the future.

COMMUNITY TV BROADCASTS BIG BAND CONCERT AT CIVIC

THE ROBIN ANDERSON BIG BAND THE JAZZ BIRDS RALSTON BROWN PENNY HANNA RUBY RUDMAN SHANNA CARLSON KAREN PHOENIX

On November 16, 2002 we performed a benefit concert for the Young at Heart Project at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium. The concert was taped live and will be re-broadcast during the new year. Look for us! There's a rumor out there that a famous TV personality may be donating a large sum to Young at Heart and this would enable us to make a tape available for the whole event including all the singers and all the tunes the band plays. The show is put together well and does follow a theme and sequence of songs, along with historical references to the tunes and credits given to composers and arrangers.

RUBY RUDMAN - COMMUNITY TV

Ruby's guest appearance on Jack Hansen's Musician's Weekly, has been playing off and on for most of the year to good reviews from all.
