A Little History of Collecting

Over the last there years I have been collecting and watching the sale of children's books authored and illustrated by the French author Pierre Probst. This started with The Golden Treasury of Caroline And Her Friends. My two sisters received this book as a Christmas present in 1968. Ever since then it has been a favorite of the family.

Several years ago I began using the web to search for this book, but with little success. Then four years ago I found an outfit called Continental Books that sells French publications, including some new Caroline books. These, as described later, were not our book but rather smaller new ones, still in their native French. For Christmas a few years ago I gave one of these to each of my siblings; we all had fun with the "new" pictures of our friends. Little did I know that there was a modest wealth of others to collect out there.

Finally, three years ago, I realized I could have been using Ebay to do the searches. I had never used Ebay before but I thought I would give it a try. Sure enough, there she was! The exact book, for sale! I was very excited, but then saw the price. $198!!! I couldn't believe it. I hadn't thought about how much I'd expect to pay. Not being the expert in children's book collecting or anything, I would probably have thought maybe $50.

Out of curiosity, I checked the auction the next day. It was over $300! The next day brought $450! I was astounded. The final price was $677! Little Caroline was a popular girl, at least amongst the crowd with cash to throw around. After seeing past the excitement I got a little depressed. That lessened my chance of finding one for myself or my siblings.

Another Caroline book came around a few months later, this one nearly identical but it appeared to be a British version, with a slightly different title but quite different stories inside. This one went for just over $400. Then over the months, lots of "little" Caroline books came up. These appeared to be identical or similar to the stories inside the Treasury, which contained six short stories of about 20-25 pages each. Some of these little stories were going for as high as $400! Insanity!

Finally I came across the Caroline Treasury two years ago for a reasonable price. I am very happy to be an owner now, but my quest is not over. Now my goal is to find ones for my brother and sisters! I will not stop searching until I do!

Since that time, I have amassed a total of 30 books, including (using my terminology on the left) the American Treasury, a new French Treasury, 6 old British/American shorts, 1 old French short, 7 new French shorts, 5 from the Fanfan series (4 in English, 1 in Spanish), 4 Enid Blytons, 2 English Golden Books and 3 German Rösa Series. Most of this collecting was done via Ebay, except for the new Frenches which I got off the web or in France itself.
