We took a trip in March, 1999 to San Diego to attend a friend’s wedding. We flew in on Friday, and it was just gorgeous, around 70 degrees. Even though it was nice outside and we rented a convertible, I noticed that Sam kept his big wool Northern California jacket on. I figured he was just cold. We cruised around San Diego for awhile and I showed him my old stomping grounds. We checked into the hotel and he kept going back and forth to his suitcase to unpack. Usually he isn’t too particular about hanging stuff up and things like that, but he made sure everything was just right. We got ready to go out to Dinner, Sam had made reservations at a really nice restaurant called "Top ‘o the Cove", in La Jolla. (www.topofthecove.com) Let’s just say this restaurant was not a place I ever went to during college…I am pretty sure they don’t serve free snacks during ‘happy hour’. Again, Sam kept acting strange, he didn’t want them to take his coat to the coat check, but they did, so Sam played along. We sat at this really secluded table, table #6, which turns out has been host to hundreds of proposals. During the course of dinner, Sam had to get up and go to the bathroom no less than 3 or 4 times.  Again, I just figured he had a lot to drink or something. In reality, Sam had to get to his jacket, because the engagement ring was safety pinned to the inside of his jacket. Finally, right before dessert, Sam grabbed his foot and claimed there was something in his shoe…well you can imagine what came next, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I said "YES" and then she slipped the ring on my finger, a perfect fit. We ate our dessert and sipped on Champagne. I looked over at Sam, for some reason, he started to get antsy again.  He hurried me along to finish our dessert, so we could leave the restaurant...... he paid the check and we walked outside. Why was Sam trying to get me outside? When I walked outside I knew, it was a super-strech Limo waiting for us. We spent hours cruising around the city and checking out the beautiful views of San Diego. Hindsight is everything…and obviously Sam was acting so strange because he knew what he was up to, but I love that the surprise was so special.
