SDUMC Forum schedule for January 19, 2003 - February 16, 2003
January 19 - Local Environmental Issues - Urban runoff. Water
shortage/drought. Native vegetation. Sand replenishment. Pest control.
Hybrid-electric vehicles. How "green" is the City of Encinitas? How
"green" should it be? John Eldon, a member of the city manager's Blue
Ribbon Environmental Committee (BREC), will summarize ways in which
Encinitas and its neighbors can enhance its position of environmental
leadership by cost-effectively protecting the local ecosystem.
January 26 - Fred and Mandy Brauer are back in town from the Middle
East and will update us on the their views of the purpose for war in Iraq,
its justification or not, the Israeli response by asking for more
foreign aid, whether they think this is a payment for Israel staying out
of the war if it starts etc.
February 2 - A Kairos Moment - Bob and Willy Ginaven will give us an
update on the fundraising campaign for phases II and III of the building
program.
February 9 - Hidden in every act of compassion toward the poor is the
danger that it will perpetuate the underlying causes of poverty. How do
we keep our charity from delaying the structural changes that justice
demands? Join in the discussion based on "The Limits of Charity" by
David Hilfiker.
February 16 - Floresta, organized by San Diego churches, seeks to
improve the lives of rural poor people through re-forestation and land
management. John Mower will tell us about the current programs in
Mexico, Haiti and the Dominican Republic and Floresta's micro-banking
programs.
