San
Jose's Thursday night skate, and a cool webpage.
Outdoor skating opens up a whole new world for skaters. It's not for everyone, but if your looking for a little adventure, and you love to skate, give it a try. After 3 years of skating in rinks a friend, Jeanie, talked me into trying skating outdoors. My first outdoor skate was in Monterey, and included the 17 mile drive. It was a long day, and we skated over 35 miles. I did it on inlines, Roces Moscows (back then), and Jeanie used her Quads. That was 9 years ago, and I'm still skating outdoors. Here's a list of some of my favorite outdoor skates.
Night Group Skating
A personal favorite, night
skating is a large part of the Bay Area Skating Scene
Skating the streets when
traffic is light is a big thrill.
Blasting downhill at 30+ mph in
the dark is just too much fun.
Crusing the streets of San
Francisco with 400-700 skaters is also a blast.
If it's too dark to see, you'll be surprised what you can skate over .

Friday Night Skate (FNS) San
Francisco's night skate
Considered by many to be the best
group outdoor skate, 300-700 skaters weekly. A must for every outdoor skater!!!
Organized by D Miles, this is the oldest night skate. The Friday Night Skate
started in 1989 after the "89" earthquake, and is going strong. Learn
more about the History of the FNS in the Friday Night Skate Story
Look for The FNS Van in the big parking lot, next to the Bay Bridge, at Bryant
and Embaracadero. Or just drive down the Embarcadero and listen for the tunes!
This skate is a must for all outdoor, urban skaters. It's about 12 miles start
to finish.
Golden Gate Park San Francisco
Every Sunday, and holidays, Skaters
of all levels gather to skate at the 6th st rink. 6-03 the rink has
been resurfaced and is now one of the best outdoor surfaces for skating. D
Miles comes through with the music every Sunday. D cranks up the tunes and the
crowd at the "rink"
at 6th and Kennedy. Check out the always impressive slalom, just up the
street, and you can even give it a try.
Monterey
A nice flat area to skate, there
is a 10 mile (round trip) trail. You can also go from Del Monte and Highway 1,
to the start of the 17 mile Drive, a 20 mile+ (round trip) along the coast.
It's an easy skate with great road surfaces. It’s best done on a week day when
traffic is not as busy. Great views, and there are a lot of non skating
activities to do in Monterey.
Canada Road
News from BAIR ...."NEWS
BULLETIN - Starting 11/2/97 the Hwy 92 to Edgewood segment of Canada will be
closed to cars on EVERY SUNDAY of the Year, with possible exceptions for rain
in Winter. This replaces the policy of 1st , 3rd, and 4th Sundays of the month
from March thru October, which replaced the original once a month in Summer
policy."
In Hillsborough, just off 280,
between Edgewood and Hwy. 84. The road runs along Crystal Springs Reservoir.
.... The road
is very smooth , and there are a few moderate hills to deal with. Not for
beginners, but a good place to learn hills when you are ready. There are lot's
of Bikers, Skaters, and Joggers. At about two miles, you will pass the Pulgas Water Temple
to the west where you can find water and picnic tables, a reflecting
pool, and grassy shady hills to snooze on.
Crystal
Springs Reservoir, Sawyer Camp Trail, trail is near by.
Shoreline
Park, Mt. View 6 miles +
Just north of Moffit Field in the
south bay take the Shoreline exit off 101 and head east. The road will end in
about 2 miles at shoreline park.A nice place for beginners to go skate, and for
anyone to get a good work out. Drive to the end of the park road, past the golf
course, to the big parking lot. Parking is free on weekdays. There are several
short loops to take from there. You can skate along the bay, and salt water
marshes and enjoy a peaceful setting. Follow the trial inland to avoid the
tidal smell that sometimes occurs, and you will hook up with the Stevens Creek
Trail, still under construction. There is a long straight away with no cross
traffic to distract you, a guaranteed leg burner if you push it, and usually a
nice headwind on the way back in the afternoon. The surface is relatively
smooth, and flat, and usually not crowded in the evenings. It's typical
bike trail width, wide enough for two way traffic.
Right now the trail ends near the
freeway off ramp about 2 miles from the parking lot, but a new section of trail
looks like it will open soon.
