COURSE OVERVIEW: This year long course examines the history of the modern world. Students will begin by studying the rise of democracy and western civilization, after which we will focus on major turning points in European history from the eighteenth century to the present. After this historical overview, students will examine a variety of geo-political regions, focusing on the interdependence and interaction of the various nations and peoples of the world.

The binder and notebook need to be exclusive to this

ASSIGNMENTS & ESLRs: Students are expected to follow the reading schedule that will be distributed at the beginning of each month. Readings will be assigned each night for homework, and a short quiz will be given the next day covering the previous nights readings. Notes should be taken on the readings in the spiral bound notebook each night and may be used during the quizzes the following day. In addition to the nightly readings, students will have in-class and take home assignments related to the reading curriculum, individual and group projects, chapter and unit tests, notebook and binder reviews, and an attendance and participation requirement. Listed below are the distribution of points the above assignment categories will be awarded and their corresponding ESLRs.

GRADING: Taking the total number of points earned by a student and dividing them by the total number of points possible for each grading period will determine the grade earned for this course. Students are urged to keep track of their assignments and scores so that they can determine their grade at any given point in the semester. Based on the number of points earned, the student percentile will then be applied to the scale below to determine a letter grade.

CLASS MANAGEMENT PLAN:
· Required materials are to be brought to class each day. Students will not be allowed to leave the classroom to get materials that were forgotten.
· Students are expected to be in their assigned seat when the bell rings at the beginning of class. Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated and may result in a loss of participation points and/or expulsion from the class.
· Cheating is not acceptable behavior under any circumstances. Please refer to the Burlingame High School Code of Conduct for a definition of cheating and its consequences.
· When a student is absent, it is their responsibility to obtain any handouts, assignments, or notes that may have been missed. After you return from an absence, you have the same number of days, plus one, to complete any missed work. All make up and late work is due at the beginning of class on the date due.
·
Makeup quizzes may be taken before or after
school by appointment for excused absences only. You may
not makeup quizzes once the chapter test for that chapter in which the quiz was
missed has been given to the class. Students
with a zero period class will need to see me to make alternate arrangements for
making up the test. Tests may not be
made up for an unexcused absence, and tests not made up will receive zero
points.
· Students are allowed three unexcused tardies per semester. Each tardy will result in the loss of an attendance point. The fourth tardy in a semester will result in a referral to the Dean of Students and a detention. Each subsequent tardy will result in a parent being contacted, additional detentions, and referrals to the Dean of Students.
OFFICE HOURS: I will be available to students in room #71 during brunch and lunch to discuss any questions or concerns you have about the course. Additionally, I can meet with students and parents before and after school by appointment.
