Senior Writer, PR & Collateral

Copper Mountain Networks; Palo Alto, Calif.

Responsible for multiple marketing communications projects and initiatives, initially on staff and then in a consulting capacity. Working closely with the vice president for marketing communications, the director of public relations and members of the product-marketing team, develop and write press releases, trade publication articles, advertorials, FAQs, white papers and collateral material promoting and publicizing the company's solutions, products, customer wins and partnerships. Wrote first draft of annual report narrative and edited shareholders letter for annual report.

Writer/Communications Manager

KPMG; San Francisco, Calif.

Working with audit and tax partners and senior audit and tax managers at a “Big Five” accounting firm, developed key messages for written proposals and oral presentations for the firm’s prospective audit and tax clients. Drafted written proposals; managed production process and ensured proposals were produced and delivered to clients on time. Assisted in preparation of oral presentations, including development of Power Point slides and other materials.

Executive Communications

Executive Speechwriter

Edison International; Rosemead, Calif.

Reporting to the vice president for corporate communications, served as speechwriter for the CEO of Edison International and the COO of Southern California Edison. Wrote speeches and talking points on electricity deregulation, other industry issues and company objectives. Drafted chairman’s letter and wrote operations review section for Edison International annual report.

Major speeches included the CEO’s remarks to the Edison International annual shareholders meeting, remarks by the CEO and the utility president to financial analysts in Los Angeles and New York, and remarks by the utility president to the California Manufacturers Association and the Orange County Business Forum, among other groups.

Senior Speechwriter

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development; Washington, D.C.

Served as senior speechwriter for Secretary Henry G. Cisneros. Wrote speeches, talking points and op-ed pieces on urban policy and housing issues for the Secretary. Drafted speeches on housing policy for the President of the United States and the Vice President. Wrote congressional testimony for the Secretary and the Assistant Secretary for Housing. Acted as lead writer/editor for widely disseminated public reports on HUD priorities and reinvention.

Major speeches included addresses by the Secretary to the World Bank, United States Conference of Mayors, National League of Cities, National Civic League, the National Association of Homebuilders and the National Press Club, the Secretary’s remarks for the White House announcement of President Clinton’s National Homeownership Strategy, and related draft remarks for President Clinton and Vice President Gore. Op-ed articles written for the Secretary, assistant secretaries and other top HUD officials were published in the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Examiner, San Jose Mercury News, Philadelphia Inquirer and other papers.

During nearly 10 years with the Santa Cruz Sentinel, reported on education and county government and wrote about a wide range of issues, including government finance, land use, environmental matters, housing, labor disputes and agriculture. Subsequently served as the Sentinel’s wire editor, managing story selection and page layout and production for state, national and international news sections.
