MORRO CASTLE, NEW JERSEY, 1934

Morro Castle - Burned 1934

In a historic tale of things gone wrong and things done wrong, the cruise ship MORRO CASTLE caught fire. Her captain had mysteriously died and his replacement had turned the ship into the wind in such a way as to help spread the flames until the whole ship was ablaze - full of passengers. Fire fighting equipment had been shut off, cutting water to the hoses up on deck. The burned out hulk was beached next to a hotel in New Jersey, providing a tourist attraction visited by many of the locals. This picture is from an old cigarette card depicting the disaster in full blaze. The reverse side of the card shows a copy of a headline crying the news of MORRO CASTLE's demise (below).
