SSHSA EDUCATION AND RECRUITMENT OUTREACH

“WAVES OF THE PAST”

This program proposes the formation of a lecture series that includes a targeted member recruitment component. It will use the SSHSA brand to give credibility and acceptability for our involved stakeholders (program recipients, donors and sponsors and participating members). The program will address groups of differing ages with age appropriate content that is “accredited” (Board Approved for this program) and by SSHSA. Youth programs may be designed to augment school district curriculum and qualify for graduation credits. Many examples exist among museums across the country that can be duplicated to achieve this outcome.

Branding of the SSHSA name and logo are crucial elements to increase public awareness and participation in SSHSA.

This project will be designed to provide member benefit to those who participate as well as serve as a community benefit allowing non-member sponsors and program recipients to take part.

Evaluation of the program’s success will be a major component to ensure maximum public impact and fundability. The key to this program’s success is that it be attractive to funders who perceive a significant public benefit. It will be, in part, a collaborative project with our communities.

Program Design:

Audiences –

Youth: To include school classrooms, after school programs (Boys/Girls Clubs), day care and summer camps groups. Elementary, middle school and older kids to have different curriculum based on appropriateness to age.

Adult: All adult age ranges to be addressed with audiences available through local service clubs (Lions, Rotary, etc.) senior centers and assisted living facilities, local SSHSA meetings with lecturers, business networking groups, etc.

Venue –

Community Based: (we go to them) School classrooms, community centers, museums, SSHSA meetings, cruise ships, etc.

Fixed Site: (they come to us) For youth, Queen Mary has agreed to host our program for school field trips. The museum complex there lends itself to both historical content and some key, graduation required science topics specific to middle school age children. Partnerships could be devised with local entities like museums, preserved ships, etc where permanent programs could be established.

Messaged Track –

Youth:

  • Science; physics of heat transference, mechanical aspects of buoyancy, etc.
  • History; European migration – Ellis Island, any aspect of the 19th century from social migration to technological development of ship technologies, 20th century history including WWI and WWII, Roaring 20s, Prohibition in the US vs European practices, trans-Atlantic relations between nations, etc.

Adult:

  • History of Ocean Liners
  • World Wars
  • European migration – genealogy methods
  • Mechanics of Ships – technology changes over time
  • History of crossing the Atlantic from sailing packets to jet airliners
  • Histories of specific Steamship Lines
  • Titanic, Lusitania, Andrea Doria, Shipwrecks in general, etc.

Specific presentations could be developed in PowerPoint for use by SSHSA trained presenters. Promotional materials will be developed that can include collateral pieces for mailing and local distribution as well as website promotion.

Sponsors will be given recognition appropriate to their desires and levels of support.

Everyone can take part from promotion and conducting presentations to soliciting and securing sponsorship funding to development of program content.
