Steve Smallcombe's VPL-VW10HT page

Hopefully all readers have some experience at this point using the 10HT's menu system to change contrast, select color temperatures, etc. After you enter the service mode and press Menu on your projector's remote, the10HT's menu system changes from the menu in the user mode.

Diagram

The first thing you may notice is that there is now an S (for Service) in the upper left hand corner that is not there in the user mode. The second thing you may notice is that there is an extra tab at the bottom of the column of tabs. To access the gain and bias settings we need to press the down cursor button on the remote until this new tab is highlighted.

If you now press the right cursor button, you will enter the W/B Adjust or white balance menu where we can check out and modify the various color temperatures

In this case, since LOW was the color temperature selected in the top, picture control menu, the menu system automatically selects LOW for adjustment. You can use up and down cursor buttons to select other color temperatures if you wish to, but since we are interested in low, we will simply click the right button one more time to actually enter the adjustment mode.

What we now see is a new screen that lists the values for the gain settings. If you use the up and down buttons you can select the various colors, but be very careful not to hit the left or right buttons as they are used to modify the settings, and we don't want to do that at this point..
If you use the up or down buttons to scroll off the top or bottom, then the bias settings appear.

Write down all of these numbers and enters, and don't change anything in low, EVER.

Making custom color temperatures
Now it is time to make a new custom color temperature. So this time we will set our color temperature to Custom 1 in the Picture Control menu and then go down to the W/B Adjust menu and hit the right button.

.Now we can use both our up and down buttons to navigate and the left and right buttons to change the values as required. When you want to exit this mode, hit enter to return to the menu system.

When we are through changing bias and gain values, there is one very important step left - saving those changes so that they will not disappear when the projector is turned off. To do this we simply need to use the cursor select the Save to Memory button in the W/B Adjust menu and click enter.

If you don't hit save to memory, your changes will be lost if you turn off the projector. (This is also a nice safety feature. If you think that you might have goofed something up and didn't right down the numbers, just don't Save to Memory. Memory changes seem to be reset at other times as well such as when you exit the service mode or switch inputs, so if you want the changes, save them. .
