The Brothers Four News

The Brothers Four : John Paine, Mark Pearson, Terry Lauber, Bob Flick

Concert Review : July 26th, 1998 Starlight Bowl, Burbank, California
by Y.S.Lin

July 26th, Sunday, it's a hot August night but the stars are bright. I arrived at Starlight Bowl around
5:30pm, it's an outdoor amphitheater, very beautiful place, most people were with family, they came earlier to enjoy pinic and wine. This is first time I ever been there, and not to speak, very exciting about The Brothers Four concert. The "Bowl" is up on a hill, from there you can see the whole Burbank city, the night view is spectacular. Program started at 6:30pm with a Jazz Vocals Gruop called "Beachfront Property", 3 male & 3 female vocals accompanied with bass, piano and drums. They are pretty good, sing, dance, everything that please audience. They did one hour show, after a short break, The Brothers Four came up with "American Singing",  "Breahfront Property" made audience dance, The Brothers Four brought audience incredible joy, everybody sang alnoe with The Brothers Four, having  great fun. I also saw a Japanse crew filming the show briefly, later on Bob explained that the crew is from Osaka TV, Japan, doing a documentary about The Brothers Four tour in U.S and Japan, ow! I hope I could get to see that film, maybe they have a shot on me.O.K, back to the concert, "American Singing" warm up the show and "Calyso Medley" cheer us up and children started dancing on the grass, "Bluegrass Medley" knocked everyone out. The place was getting so hot that John's guitar string broke as well as Mark's banjo string, it was real hot, I think it's more than 90F degree pulse the lighting, I could see they sweat a lot. So, John had to use Mark's 6-string guitar and Mark had to use his 12-string guitar for the rest of the show. By the way, this is first time I see Bob Flick playing BSX-BASS, that's very neat. After the show, I got my "Tokyo Tapes" CD signed by all the members, talked to John and Bob, but not very long because Osaka TV crew had an interview session for them. Anyway, it's another wonderful wonderful night with The Brothers Four!

Whittier, California
by Y.S.Lin

I didn't know Whittier was so close to my place, once I found out from the map, I couldn't wait to see The Brothers Four there, The Ruth B. Shannon Performing Arts Center is a very beautiful theater, it's certainly great to be there.
The Ruth B. Shannon Center for The Perfoming Arts
The Perfoming Arts Center welcomes The Brothers Four for the very first time performing their wonderful music over there

The concert started at 3:00pm, Bob showed up with his electric BSX bass, Mark with banjo, John & Terry with their favorite guitars, but on the stage there was a spare guitar set up for John (I guess) becasue if the temperature get high guitar string might break again.

The Brothers Four opened with "I hear America Singing", the audiences were so happy to hear it, the crystal clear banjo sound cheer up everyone and their strong & beautiful voices made everyone sing alone with them. During the intermission, I saw one person carrying "Sing of Our Times" LP album, I guessed he wanted The Brothers Four's autograph on it, and the other guy saw it, he shouted out "Hey! Do you know that's the best album they ever put out!" , and they started talking about "Sing of  Our Times", I feel the same way that's their best album. I am very happy to see so many people still love The Brothers Four from age 6 to 64.

Concert Review: Dec 5th, 1999, La Quinta Resort, La Quinta, California
by Y.S.Lin

La Quinta is a new city (I guess) near Palm Spring, and La Quinta Resort is a very
beautiful place with golf course, vacation suite and one performing theater.

we (with my wife and son) went there 2 hours early, and spent some time taking pictures
and fresh air over around the resort.
The concert started at 4:00pm sharp and seats are 99% full, our seats were at 6th row and
had a very good view of  each member of The Brothers Four. Much to my surprise, my
3-year-old son enjoys the concert more than I do, he was dancing all the way through.
couple of people came to tell us that he is a good boy, that put a big smile on our face, and so
you would know The Brothers Four's music is full of joy and happiness, and certainly has good
influence on our next generation, their music will last forever. During this concert, it was the very
first time that I heard they perform "Four Strong Winds" on stage, usually Mr. John Paine would
sing "Early Morning Rain" as his favorite, this time it was replaced by "Four Strong Winds", and
they did it so beautifully that I wish they will include it in their next live recording. Overall, the
performance is surperb and you can hear it on Brothers Four's "Tokyo Tapes" CD, if you haven't
got "Tokyo Tapes" yet, get it right away!!
