This Cage by Sue Hobbs
I built this cage in which I
roost and do not fly
I built the wall behind which I quietly die
I built the prison with its great stone walls
I made this silence where nothing calls
or seems to call to me.
I built this place where
no one dances
no one sings
no one plays
no one brings
the light in.
I built this place.
It is my place.
My dark heart place.
I'm opening the cage so I can fly
I'm finding the door so I won't die
I'm fleeing the prison and its terrible walls
I'm breaking the silence where my god calls
has always called to me
To leave this place,
to dance
to sing
to play
to bring
the light in
To the places --
all the places --
where dark hearts wait.
