Once we settled in with "Alex", we decided to volunteer our time to various GPA
events and Show-n-Tell's held by the people we first met at the pet store. It was
rewarding for us to share our experiences with "Alex" to passers-by at the
Show-n-Tell's. "Alex" took all this attention in stride by falling asleep in the
exercise pen -- a true couch potato.
We haven't been able to attend as many GPA events as
in the past, family life and work being what it is. But we still think of all the
greys we know of and feel good knowing the chapter is doing its best to place these dogs
in good homes.
The group of GPA volunteers eventually formed their
own chapter to better serve Los Angeles and Orange counties. This was started in October,
1995. They've been very successful at finding homes for the greyhounds, with over
700 placements to date. (This chapter has its very own Web site. It has a lot of information
concerning retired racing greyhound adoption, a chapter newsletter, its calendar of upcoming events, a
greyhound gift catalog and links to other greyhound groups dedicated
to saving ex-racers.)
I've been busy with other
greyhound-related things, though. I got involved with designing a web
site for The Greyhound-List mailing list and its news archives, and step
in as an occasional substitute list administrator when the regulars are
away. And I was lucky enough to get to help out on the editorial staff
of Celebrating Greyhounds
magazine. So it's been greyt. |
