Glacier National Park

The photos below were taken in 2001, you may also want to take a look at what the glaciers in Glacier National Park looked like on June 30 2002. I shot those from a helicopter & just finished mapping them on google earth/panoramio, the shrinkage shocked me even though I knew it is happening see those at my Panoramio Website.

Located in Montana USA and Canada Glacier is also known as Waterton–Glacier International Peace Park. Human history in the park dates back more then 10,000 years. In the early 1800's it became a popular hunting area, When the railroad was built more people discovered the area. In 1900 a forest preserve was established in the area. In 1910 president Taft established it as America's 10th national park and many lodges were constructed including the one that I stayed in called Lake McDonald Lodge.. In 1932 Going–to–the–Sun Road was completed across the park, crossing the continental divide, a marvel of engineering construction took 11 years and cost the lives of 3 men. In 1932 the US and Canadian governments decided to join the area into an international peace park.

I traveled to the park via Amtrak and stayed a very short time, and only saw a small part of the park but every monent was precious. Come back with me and take a look at a little of what Glacier has to offer. The map only shows a small part of the park, clicking on the photos will take you to seperate pages where you can get a better look.

For more details about the park visit Glacier National Park Website Visitor Center. For some streaming presentations about how the glaciers are melting, forest fires and bear population survays check out Glacier National Park Electronic Field Trip. To get there hop abord Amtrak , they need our support or the oppertunity to ride passenger trains in the US may be gone in the next few years.
