Preferred Sources of Art Information Online

Artists and art lovers enrolled in "Online Art" at Santa Rosa Junior College in California USA during Fall 1999, submitted their favorite sites. The offerings are all excellent, each is worth viewing. Out of all these wonderful sites I must choose only 3 to tell you about. Due to this limitation I shall review 3 that represent many artist's work.

ART HISTORY RESOURCES: Part 1 Prehistoric Art
contents This is a very extensive resource, well annotated. Not heavy on the eye candy, but there is a lot to be learned here. I have only scratched the surface here. Truly an intellectual site.
The opening page is filled with links and only one image. For a more detailed list go to the "contents" page. Here we find subcategories under the main categories as well as short descriptions of the main categories.
DataA lot of historical information is offered and the timelines are very useful. The links page is extensive, offering a glimpse into where the information has been gathered from.
A lot of research has gone into this site. I shall return here often.

Mark Harden's Artchive
This is a fine collection of photos and paintings, from many artists. A list is presented in a frame ti the left. There are sites that present more artists but the navigation is better on this one. The list is presented full length down the screen, making it easy to use.
Image ViewerTo present the artwork as well as possible, this site makes use of a JavaScript referred to as Image Viewer. The image can be resized to fit the window or resized to the user's desire. That is very handy, it helps to view the entire peace of art without scrolling.
Not all of the pages offer this option, but hopefully he will add this feature to all of them. Adding it should be a matter of just pasting in the script.
Hard to readMy only problem with this site is a fairly common one. Some of the text on this site is a little hard to read, not enough contrast between it and the page. When designing a page it is important to consider that a lot of people who use the web have poor vision. Take a look at a page that compares backgrounds for legibility

ArtMecca
ArtMecca This was a link from Gustav Klint.
ArtMecca gets an A+ for navigation. organization of art and display. The single page works very will because of the pull down list. The redundant buttons and text links, make the site usable by any browser. This site even has a site map. The quality of the art is high and they present the information about the artist very professionally.
I would be very proud to have my photography represented on Art Mecca. I found the add-a-link, and noticed that they only list 150 "Art Sites." I expected a larger list. Because they put an outside artist's site in a frame, I won't add my site. I already have xoom's frame.
