Manipulating an Unsatisfactory Image

When viewing my photographs, I sometimes find that what I see is not what I get. Sometimes the subject is too dark, or the background is distracting. Both of these problems occurred when I shot this Photograph of a pair of Roosevelt Elk from a Tram in a wildlife preserve in Washington State called North West Trek.

Rosevelt Elk Here we see the original photo. The Elk are too dark, you can't see their faces. The image is not clear, and the background is distracting. The Photo lacks a sense of depth. Also it needs cropping. The viewer's attention is not drawn to the main point of interest, the Elk. In short the first product is unsatisfactory.
The corrected photo After adjusting the color levels on the image. desaturateing the faces and necks of the Elk. Lightening the background, and darkening the foreground. I gave the photo a crisper appearance, and cropped it. These changes draw your attention to the intended subject matter, the Elk and make the image more appealing.
