CIS67B - Wide Area Networks - Spring 2009
 
Course Description
Fundamental concepts of telephony, telecommunication, and wide area networking. 
Emphasis on analog and digital transmission techniques. Emphasis on circuit-switching 
and packet-switching. Exploration of optimization in telecommunication.
 
Recommended:
Introduction to Data Communications CIS66 or Local Area Networks CIS67A

Objectives
    Learn the basics of networking fundamentals, protocols, network design,
    implementation, and troubleshooting and support.
 
Evaluation: Students will receive points for the following:

Final grade will be based on total points earned where:
          97-100 points   = grade of A+
          93- 96 points   = grade of A
          90- 92 points   = grade of A-
          87- 89 points   = grade of B+
          83- 86 points   = grade of B
          80- 82 points   = grade of B-
          77- 79 points   = grade of C+
          73- 76 points   = grade of C
          70- 72 points   = grade of C-
          67- 69 points   = grade of D+
          63- 66 points   = grade of D
          60- 62 points   = grade of D-
          Below 60 points = grade of F
 
Attendance and Withdrawals
You are responsible for all topics covered in lecture as well as any covered in
the assigned readings. Some materials covered in lecture are not covered in the 
book. It is your responsibility to insure that you are properly registered in the 
class or properly dropped from the class. Unofficial withdrawals from the class will 
receive a grade of F.
 
Exam Identification
Identification may be required prior to receiving an exam. Please bring on exam days.
 
Cheating Policy
Cheating during a test or submitting non-original papers is grounds for dismissal 
with a grade of "F" in the class.  
Papers submitted and homework assignments should not be ones that were previously 
submitted for credit in other courses and must be your own work. Evidence of 
cheating during an exam is also grounds for a grade of "F" in the course.
 
Incomplete Grade
A grade of incomplete is only given in the case of an emergency or justifiable reason 
such as illness or death in the family.  An incomplete contract form must be initiated.
 
Extra Credit
Opportunities to earn extra credit may be offered toward during the quarter.
