The
“Catalog of Pre-Prohibition California Saloon Tokens,”
the culmination of several years of work, has just been received from the
printer. Very favorable comments
have been received from the few people who have already had a chance to see a
copy.
The
catalog is
hard bound
(maroon, attractive token designs depicted on cover), 8˝x11”
in size, 304 total pages, profusely illustrated
with token images and go-with items – in the listing section every other page
is a page of illustrations. Listings are arranged alphabetically within locality.
Each listing is provided a simple catalog number and an Estimated Value
code.
Token
inscriptions are provided in detail, as are other characteristics (material,
shape, size).
There are
many previously unlisted items as well as numerous corrections to previously
published listings.
Attribution information is provided for tokens when that information has
been located. Maverick tokens are
assigned a Certainty of Attribution value ranging from 1 to 5 (highest certainty
of attribution). A special section
lists those tokens that appear to be from a California locality, but for which
there is no attribution, or the attribution is speculative (Certainty of
Attribution = 0).
The
Comprehensive Index itself is worth the price of the catalog.
Each and every token is fully indexed by saloon name and proprietor(s)
name(s). While the catalog was
being assembled, this index was of great help in providing attributions for a
number of maverick pieces.
There
are additional information sections useful and valuable to every collector in
the Introduction and the Appendix sections.

300 copies have been printed.
