"The Arcata Union" Arcata,
California
Saturday, March 12, 1887
There is no law we know of to prevent any class of people,
however undesireable they may be, from coming here, but there is
a way to make sure such people behave themselves. At a
late hour last Saturday night --- or rather early on Sunday
morning --- there was boisterous proceedings indulged in &
around the Plaza which had better not be repeated here.
Courtesans & pimps who have found the climate too warm for
them in Eureka will find the mercury at high range for them in
this town if they don't carry themselves straight.

"The Ferndale Enterprise" Ferndale,
California Friday, May 11, 1894 The "Arcata Union" states that the shocking murder which took place in the house of ill-fame at that city on the night of April 27th, aroused the people to a high state of excitement, & that they are determined the house shall be wiped out. The town trustees have been petitioned to pass an ordinance suppressing such nuisances within the town. |

People in Ferndale do not dwell together in unity. A house of
ill repute in that town has been the cause of much trouble for
several months past, & for the removal or abatement, of
which a suit is pending in the Superior Court, was burned to
the ground last Tuesday night. The house can well be spared,
but the loss of the hall adjoining is rather serious. The
Ferndalians have a peculiar method of dealing with suspected evil
doers that sometimes get them into trouble.

Bessie Gordon, an inmate of the house of ill-fame at the lower
end of Main street in Rohnerville, was horribly burned about 3
o'clock Friday morning. Her clothing caught fire from a
cigarette, & before assistance could be called she was
enveloped in flames. Whether she will recover is not known.

The woman who was so seriously burned in Rohnerville last week is
recovering. She is being cared for by the good ladies of that
town who by their acts show a comendable Christian spirit.
| "The Ferndale Enterprise" Ferndale,
California Tuesday, January 3, 1899 A dispatch from Fort Brag, Mendocino county, states that the dead body of Lena Way, otherwise known as "Rosie O'Grady," was found in a cabin there last Tuesday & that it was supposed that she had committed suicide. |

| The dead woman was a half-breed, the youngest of several sisters residing in Eureka, & was rescued from a disreputable house there about two years ago & sent to the Salvation Army home near Oakland. It would appear now that after leaving the home she had resumed her former evil life & had paid the penalty. | |

"The Daily Humboldt
Standard" Eureka, California Monday, December 19, 1898 AN UNATURAL MOTHER |
| The police today raided a house of ill
fame known as #53 D street & took from the house Cora
Belle Hixon, a fourteen year old girl. They also arrested
the propriortress, a woman known as Nellie Raymond, &
charged her with harboring a minor in a house of ill
fame. The pair was taken before Police Judge Melendy this morning when the child admitted that she had been an inmate of the house for several months. She also told the Judge that she was first introduced to the life she had commenced by her mother who put her in a house kept by colored women. The police had been aware of the chid's presence in - the D street house for some time, but being unable to find her there when search was made, had to content themselves with warning the propriortress against harboring her. The Raymond woman was fined $75 this afternoon & a warrant was issued for the arrest of the unnatural mother of the child, Mrs. Martina McNeil, who resides at South Park. She is a divorced woman & enjoys an unsavory reputation in her neighborhood. The child is locked up in the city prison & it is probable that she will be taken in charge by the Salvation Army or Penial Mission & sent to some rescue home in another part of the state.
