This wooden track in Detroit was 125 meters
around,
with 60-degree bankings (this is NOT an aerial photo). The lap
record was under 8 seconds. My teammate Craig Elliott (below)
is about to sling me into to the race. c1976

| I became infatuated with cycling around the age
of 13, and acquired my first racing license in 1971. I started racing in England on an old Falcon with steel
cranks. I rode in the first bike race Greg LeMond ever saw. I dropped
out of college to go the Olympic Trials in 1976 and was selected to the
U.S. National Team, but retired the next year when I graduated from
college and took a real job. |
How's this for a crash!!?

BICYCLES I HAVE KNOWN | I've been through a few bikes in my life and still
favor the designs of the mid to late 1970s. Framesets were at
their sleekest and most refined, and the Campagnolo Nuovo
Record and Super Record component gruppos have never
been surpassed for utility, durability or aesthetics. My bikes
still have that old equipment and they perform as new. I only
wish I held up as well. I am presently riding a Richard
Sachs and a GIOS Torino, after going
through, in order, a Peugeot, Falcon, Carleton, Argos, Bianchi,
and a Stowe. Thank goodness for Vintage Velos, I can still look like an old
timer. |
