Every five years, the International researchers who produce the IGRF table data for magnetic declination calculations update their data. This will allow very accurate calculations for the previous 5 years since their last data update, as well as very accurate extrapolation for the next five years. I have tried through my Internet Service provider to post the two necessary files you would need to update your version of SUNBEAR. However, every attempt by me has been unsuccessful. I will leave the instructions posted in this web page so you will have a reference of what needs to be done. However, your attempts to download the two files I reference here will not be successful. To obtain these files, send me an Email at Sunbear Associates. If your firewall is configured to not permit attachments with a .exe extension, let me know in your Email. I have a work-around.

There are three (3) simple steps to update your current version of SUNBEAR to incorporate a new IGRF data set for the most precise magnetic declination calculations of the years 1996 - 2000, and for very accurate extrapolations in the years 2001 - 2005.

  1. Download the following file: "IGRF05.TBL"   Save this file in the same directory containing your current SUNBEAR files (usually C:\SUNBEAR\ )..  The new data file contains an exact ending measurement for the end of the five year period 1995 - 2000.  The extrapolated data for the next five year period begins with this new and more accurate data for the year 2000.

  2. Either delete, or rename, the current SUNBEAR.EXE   The file you download in step 3 has the same name.   I would recommend that you rename this executable file to SUNBEAR1.EXE   Then you will always be able to go back and re-execute your existing SUNBEAR program.

  3. Download the following file: "SUNBEAR.EXE"   Save this file in the same directory containing your current SUNBEAR files (usually C:\SUNBEAR\ ).   This new program file will call for the new data file you downloaded in step 1 above and must take the place of any current file by the same name.  The SUNBEAR.EXE is version 2.53.4

  4. You are done.   The new program and data file will correctly calculate Magnetic Declinations anywhere in the world through the year 2005.  Come back then for the next update.  If you have any trouble at all, Email me at Sunbear Associates with a complete description of the steps you took and the problem you're having.  I will get right back to you.
