MARATHON TRAINING ... Vicki is training for the San Diego Marathon (walking) in June. As a result, we have been spending our Saturdays going on ever-increasing distance walks. Today's was 11 miles. We've walked further than that before. Perhaps it was because we got such a late start. Perhaps it was because I have not been keeping my steps up this week. Whatever the case, I was beat by the time we finished our walk of almost three hours.
Tomorrow morning, we will do an 'easy' 4-5 miles, possibly jogging at least part of it. SPRING IS GREAT!!

RACE RESULTS ... It was the 25th running of the Mercury News 10K Run/5K Walk. There were a surprisingly large number of people present, given the weather.
It was COLD (low 40's, snow on the surrounding hilltops), and RAINING!! But we went ahead and ran the race.
Vicki & I both jogged the entire 10K (that's 6.2 miles). I finished in 1 hour 8 minutes, she was just 3 minutes behind. We both felt a great sense of accomplishment, having completed our first 10K jogging the entire distance.
It wasn't any spectacular time, but for two formerly fat old farts, it was something! And, it is a time to serve as a bar for next year's race.

VANITY?? ... Fred, at http://www.onephatman.com, has been very successful in his weight loss and weight training programs. Once a critic of anyone that would undergo the knife as a solution to their weight woes, Fred has found himself in a a situation of being 200 lbs of Fred in a formerly ~370 lbs bag. Sporting a little sag, his latest FAQ reveals that he is going to use plastic surgery to rid himself of excess skin.
Being in a similar condition, I understand his plight. However, I think it prudent to give the body a chance to adapt, and recycle some of those cells, before plunking up to $10,000 down. Since I rarely see Fred in anything but clothed photos, I really don't see anything wrong ... nor do I think anyone else would, except possibly some guys in the locker room, his wife, and himself. On second thought, Fred looks to be in better condition than over half of the guys in this country, so they wouldn't have much to say either.
Go for it, Fred!! There is nothing wrong with wanting to look good.
I wish you the best of luck, with your nip and your tuck.

HIDDEN TREASURES ... I don't know about you, but I'm getting to the point where I treasure ALL of my free time. With my work schedule, it is sometimes difficult to find time for enough exercise. Yes, I do miss getting in an hour or two of walking a day.
I've scoped out a nice 1.7 mile circuit near work, with few intersections or traffic lights. I find that if I have 30 minutes free, I can lace up the sneakers and hit the road for a brisk walk. It gives me a chance to clear the cobwebs, and it can be chalked up as an accomplishment for the day!
Look around. Do you have any small nuggets of time that might be put to better use?

"10 Minutes Counts!" by Jo Ann Taylor ... Walking Articles by the Walking Connection - information for people who love to walk, hike and travel ... A recent study conducted at Stanford University took a group of people and divided them into two groups. Half exercised for 30 consecutive minutes, the other half exercised in 10 minute intervals - once in the morning, afternoon, and evening. At the end of the study, both groups increased their fitness levels at the same amount and at the same pace. So, not having a consecutive half hour is no longer a reason not to get up and get moving! If you only have 10 minutes, use it to your advantage. It will all add up to a healthier you!

HALF MILLION STEPS ... for the month of February, I attained my mini-goal of maintaining a 20K steps/day average, finishing with a total of 562,678 steps, or 20,095 a day. Vicki is in training for a marathon in June, so I expect that the totals will increase, as we take some of the trial walks - some totaling over 20 miles.
Today was beautiful - sun shining and mild. Although Vicki is fighting a cold, we went for a 7-mile walk this morning along the top of the levee/river banks of the Guadalupe River. Tomorrow, we may do some more hiking and, this time, I will take a camera.
We are starting a new team challenge tomorrow, for the Walk Club. That will provide some additional incentive to jack up the step totals.
