2000.11.04 - Temptation... I guess that I am just a weak person when it comes to goodies. I did pretty well with all of the Halloween candy about this past week. But that was compounded by having some international customers in all week, including lunches, and a group dinner. It was a FAR cry from my typical Veggie Delite lunch and 600-700 calories dinners. But, I did manage a small loss, and I'll take that any day. It *does* toss me off the trend I was trying to maintain for a Millennium 250 lbs goal. If I do well this week, I can still make it.
I think I can ... I think I can ...
2000.11.05 - Where the Rubber Meets the Road ... I have just purchased my 7th pair of athletic shoes. Why so many?
I have large feet - measured as 12 1/2 "D". Not so unusual, but I also have a bunion - a deformity of the big toe joint - on my left foot. This results in my left foot being a bit wider than normal.
Four of my pairs of shoes are size 13, which should be big enough. However, when walking for extended periods of time, they begin to make my feet sore. So I tried some 14's. These shoes have enough room in the "toe box" for comfortable wear, and if laced up snuggly, feel OK over long periods of time.
So, I'm keeping the 13's for wear in the rain and around the house. The big guns are for walks greater than a mile.
While shopping for shoes, I saw a great deal of difference in the construction and fit of some of the pricier brands. My favorites are NIKE Air Equivalence, and Reebok DMX Walkers. I also have a pair of New Balance shoes that I bought in Las Vagas that are 13 EEE, with Dr. Schoalls insoles - quite comfortable, but a heavier shoe. Compared to the Nike's, the New Balance are probably twice as heavy.
The moral ... shop the sales, but go for quality. Make sure the shoes *FIT*. There is no such thing as a break-in period for athletic shoes. They should be comfortable and ready for a three-mile walk, out of the box.
Happy trails!!
2000.11.07 Back on Track ... It is beginning to feel like I'm back on track. With the customers gone and my eating back under my own control, I'm getting that *hungry* feeling at mealtimes - as if the fuel tank is really edging toward empty.
Anyway, I peeked at the scale and it is starting to head lower. We will see the total extent on Saturday.
2000.11.08 The Magic Formula ... A good friend of mine found himself in the hospital last weekend. Fortunately, his medical problems were temporary, but compounded by his excess weight. When he said that the doctor told him some weight loss would help, I offered that there were several online sites that provided tools to make the weight loss experience a little more manageable.
I followed our short call with an email pointing out my favorite sites. I also pointed out that the magic formula for my loss is the fact that I am doing this in concert with my very significant other. We support each other, and the fact that meals are planned around a healthy, weight loss program helps immensely.
I closed with the second component of the magic formula -, that an exercise program is necessary, which can be as simple as walking. Although one should not push themselves too hard at first, a good program should work up to at least 20-30 minutes of brisk walking a day. That amounts to about 1-1.5 miles.
Heck, I get that just walking the dog in the morning and evening. I have a 1 mile route, through a city park, that provides a potty stop for the dog. I have a separate 1.5 mile circuit that I use on weekends or evenings after the dog has been walked. My current "brisk" pace around that course is 24.5 minutes. That works out to a mile in 16.3 minutes, or 3.67 miles/hour.
As I mentioned to my friend, I was just providing the information and expected that he would use it to his benefit in a manner that suited his lifestyle.
The most important thing is to take that first step ...
