Week of November 26, 2000 Weight: 268.75
Total Loss: 61.752000.11.25 - Out of Reach...??? I remember a time, long, long ago, when I told my wife-to-be that I could lose 20 pounds any time I wanted. At the time, I believed it. I was overweight (less than I am now), and thought that a crash diet or fast would allow me to attain that goal. She may have taken me up on it once, maybe. As far as I recall, I did not follow through successfully, nor was I truly dedicated to the goal (besides thinking about using foolish techniques).
PLEASE SIGN THE GUESTBOOKThis weight loss program has been my longest, and has the best foundation of any I have tried. The weight loss has been the result of exercise and sensible eating, with focus on the end goal. As you may know, from previous Journals, I set myself a mini-goal of 250 by January 1. Up until this week, that goal was barely, but definitely attainable. It is now in jeopardy.
This week was not all that bad, with 0.75 lbs loss - plus I had to go into work this morning and was not able to take my long weekend walk this morning. So, there may be a jump in store for the next weigh-in. It will require a 5 lbs loss for this coming week to get back on track. That was my loss from two weeks ago, so I know it can be done. The key is to step up the exercise and stay away from "bad" foods. So, before tossing in the towel on this Millennium Challenge, I'm going to step up the exercise to walking 4-5 miles per day, for the week, and see what the result is.
This is the true essence of a challenge - trying to overcome unbeatable odds. It also fires up the competitive side of me. As I said when I started this mini-challenge, I will not be disappointed with the result. I have everything to lose, and everything to gain - it's a win-win situation!!
The countdown has started.

2000.11.26 - Weight Loss Tools ... I have been looking around and have found several sites that contain useful aides for anyone on a weight loss program. I have highlighted the ones I think are best on the Links page. My latest find is MyFitnessPage.com. I'm a numbers person, and I like to graph data so that the "big" picture can easily be viewed. This site provides some easy to use data entry and graphing tools that provide that type of insight.
Another site that is worth wandering through is About.com. Although the name of the site leaves you wondering what it contains, it is the cover for a multitude of web pages containing much useful information. Click on the Health/Fitness link on the main page, and then focus on the section covering Fitness/Wellness. Some of the current sections are:
Fitness/Wellness
Bicycling
Bodybuilding
Exercise
Low Fat Cooking
Nutrition
Running/Jogging
Stress Management
Swimming
Tennis
Vegetarian Cuisine
Walking
Weight Loss
Look them over. Although the "web" of pages can sometimes seem unending, I think you'll find the information quite useful.I did a 4+ mile walk this morning for a total of about 70 minutes. This evening, I'll do a 1 mile walk with the dog, and another 1.5 "just for fun".
36 days to go, weight:267.75, 17.75 lbs to lose.
2000.11.27 - Day Off ... I did not weigh this morning - I had to go into work early, and then had minor surgery to remove a cyst from my face this afternoon. I just forgot to weigh... but I did walk about 1.5 miles. The weight should be a little lower tomorrow, since I had to give up lunch today.
I have more pictures from the S.F. Zoo that I will use in next week's DietProgress report. In addition, I have a few more of the articles from Greg Landry. Although he is promoting the sale of his book on his web site, the articles stick to the subject of fitness and weight control.

2000.11.29 - Plateau ?? ... This is why people don't weigh every day. The weight goes up ... then down ... or stays put!! I walked 1 Mile yesterday morning, and another 3.4 last night. It will fall before Saturday morning, I know.
33 days to go, weight 268.5, 18.5 lbs to lose
2000.11.30 - 4.0 MPH ... After taking Sadie for her 1 mile walk, I came in and decided it was such a nice eveing that I would go back out for "my" walk. It was getting close to bedtime, so I chose to walk the 1.5 mile route. I put on the good Reebox DMX2 shoes, and with CD player, set out for a brisk walk.
From some of the sites I've been visiting, I found that part of my speed problem was not pushing off firmly with the back foot as I take a stride forward. In fact, the sites say that it is more important to get a good push, even at the expense of a shorter stride. The stride will lengthen naturally if technique is correct.
So, I tried it. I picked up speed and found that I was exerting my self more than usual, but not overdoing it. Anyway, I completed the walk in 23 minutes, which worked out to 3.9 miles per hour (15.3 mins/mile). The next time I walk for time, I should break the 15 minute mile (4 MPH) barrier.
Weigh-in is Saturday morning. Vicki & I have developed the "routine", where we tend to eat lighter the night before, and weigh after a good morning walk. On Friday evening, weather permitting, I work in an extra 1.5-2.5 miles. We'll see what the "trend line" on the chart shows after the Saturday weigh-in.
By the way, any readers of this are encouraged to also checkout Fred's site at OneFatMan.com. He has lost an amazing 93 lbs and has taken up writing short fiction stories. Very interesting and entertaining.

2000.12.01 - I DID IT!! (almost)... Just a quick note ... Sadie & I did our 1 mile walk and I then geared up for the 2.4 mile circuit. I started off strong, pushing off aggressively with each stride. About half way through, I could feel that the friction on one of my smaller toes on my right foot was probably causing a blister. But I pushed on - and finished the circuit in 36:23.75, (15.16 minutes/mile) or 3.95649685174585002862049227246709 miles/hour.
In case you haven't guessed, I need to complete that course in under 36 minutes to break the 4 MPH barrier. Maybe next time ... maybe...
