2001.01.07 NEW GOALS ... - Well the new year is upon us, and it is time to set up the charts for the next period. Since I have a mini- vacation scheduled for April, it is perfect to set some mini-goals for this 100-day period. (Check out the The 100-Day, Count-down, 'Good-Enough,' Feedback, Diet and Exercise Program.). I think that in 100 days, I'd like to weigh 215. That represents an aggressive, but achievable goal.

The DietWatch user, SaladKing, invited others to join in on his 9-week challenge (to his birthday). For that 9-week period, I'm targeting to lose 28 lbs, getting down to 225. I am already lighter (nice word!!) than I have been in 15 years. That will put me into territory I was in when we lived in Minnesota in 1977!!

Why do I set these mini-goals? Why not! They help to motivate me to stay on the program. They remind me of the need for more than just casual exercise each day. And, they help to feed my competitive spirit.

Any successful weight loss must be a permanent weight loss. There are many that start with good intentions, only to fall back into old habits. Anyone CAN lose weight at a rate of 1-2 lbs/week. It takes a commitment to a change of lifestyle to continue that for weeks and months. But if it becomes your new lifestyle, then it is just another part of your everyday life and the weight continues to fall off. I've been working on this for 38 weeks - almost 10 months. It isn't difficult once you put the pieces into place. The challenge is not whether you can lose a large amount of weight, the challenge is whether you can lose a little weight, each week, over a long period of time.

9 weeks to go, weight 253.00, 28.0 lbs to lose for SaladKing Challenge.
100 days to go, weight 253.00, 38.0 lbs to lose for Hawaii Mini-Goal.

2001.01.08 MOVIN' & GROOVIN' ... - Vicki and I went out for a long (4.2 mile) walk yesterday. I felt pretty good at the end. The weather was nice, so I ended up taking the dog for three walks (1 mile each) plus another 1.5 for myself. Anyway, my little SportBrain recorded the total activity as shown below:

January 7 Walking

Unfortunately, I've come down with a cold - it was coming on before all of the activity, for a couple of days. So, I am "down" except for taking the dog out mornings & evenings. To make matters worse, rain is forecast for tomorrow. ::Oh well::    My goal is to get up to a daily average of 12000 steps a day.

2001.01.09 NOONER ... - I wish!! I tried walking to my favorite Subway sandwich shop at noon today. Although I've driven in almost every workday for the past 5 months, I wasn't sure of the distance. I took off at a brisk pace and arrived there in about 25 minutes. I had a leisurely lunch, and made the 25 minute trek back to the office. When I checked the SportBrain printout for the activity, it showed that the trek was 27 minutes, 1.5 miles at a pace of about 3.4 MPH. The return trip was 27 minutes, 1.6 miles at 3.6 MPH (different return route). Not too bad!!

So, looks like I can get a few more miles in by stretching my lunch hour to 1.5 hours and extending my work day (like who goes home at 5pm?). We'll see if I can keep up the effort - dog walk morning & evening @ 1 mile each + 3.2 miles to/from the Subway shop (5.2 miles total). It better cause a few extra pounds to fall off!!

* * * * *

For those of you Dawn/Dusk Patrollers, I've found a treat for you. The web site at http://www.heavens-above.com provides the best viewing times for major satellites orbiting the earth. They have the schedules for the International Space Station (ISS), Russian MIR, and the Hubble Space Telescope, to name a few. Find the page for the satellite you are interested in, select your city (unless you happen to know your latt/long), and it will provide a viewing schedule for the next week for your location. By the way, on the brightness scale, a large NEGATIVE number is brighter, a large POSITIVE number is dimmer.

Enjoy!!

Thank You for Visiting!!
