2001.02.03 COMEBACK ... After last week's disappointing gain, I made up for it this week, by dropping almost 6 lbs. That's about "normal" for an aggressive two week period (i.e. if I hadn't weighed last week at all). I'm not sure what did it .. it could have been excess water, or the BEANS from the burritos the night befoer. Even though they were FAT-FREE refried beans, low in calories, they did represent BULK that I could not have made up for overnight. So, we will call it a blip and go on.

I went out walking today, but unfortunately my SportBrain must not have been clipped on correctly - it did not record the dog's 1 mile walk, nor my 3+ miles that I did afterwards. Oh well, I know I did it, and I've recorded it into my log.

Some people think that exercise is a big burden, that takes a bunch of time. Walking is the perfect exercise that ANYONE can do, it is easy, and you would be surprised how quickly the effects are felt. Here are some suggestions for people thinking of taking up walking:

I have bought, and subsequently given away, a couple of thousand dollars of exercise equipment that I had intentions of using, but never did. My best investment was in a good, comfortable pair of walking shoes, and a couple of sweatshirts.

         Don't sweat the small stuff.....

The philosophy professor stood before his class and had some items in
         front of him.

When class began, wordlessly he picked up a large empty mayonnaise
jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks, about two inches in
         diameter.

He then asked the students if the jar was full? They agreed that it
         was.

So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into
the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled
into the open areas between the rocks. The students laughed.

The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of
course, the sand filled up everything else.

"Now", said the professor, "I want you to recognize that this is your
life. The rocks are the important things - your family, your partner,
our health, and your children - anything that is so important that
if it were lost, you would be nearly destroyed."

"The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your
         house, and your car."

"The sand is everything else. The small stuff."

"If you put the sand into the jar first, there is no room for the
         pebbles or the rocks."

"The same goes for your life."

"If you spend all your energy and time on the small stuff, you will
never have room for the things that are important to you."

"Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play
with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your wife
         out to dinner."

"There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a
dinner party and fix the disposal."

"Take care of the rocks first - the things that really matter. Set
your priorities. The rest is just sand."

Subject: TOP 10 LIST -- #7

"I subscribe to Shape magazine and in the January issue there was a "Top 10" list of tips for staying motivated. Thought these might be of interest and I will post them one at a time in my next 10 posts."

"#7 THINK LIKE AN ATHLETE. Avid exercisers don't wonder IF they should go to the gym. They ask themselves WHEN they'll go. For them, exercise is as automatic as brushing their teeth. To continue working out, you need to form an identity around exercising and strive to keep that connection alive. Two ways to develop the connection: Maintain a regular workout schedule and put boundaries on areas of your life that interfere with fitness."
