Total Loss: 87.752001.02.11 CONQUERED ANOTHER 5K ... Conquered may be a bit of an exaggeration, since I've been walking up to 3x that distance on weekends. We decided to take BART to Oakland, where the American Heart Association was holding this event. When we left the rapid transit station, we thought it would be a 6 block walk to the start. Well, it turned out to be half way around the lake - about 1.7 miles!

When we arrived at the start, the race had been underway for about 3.5 minutes. I started off at a jog, and slowed to a walk after a few minutes. The weather was cool with prospects for more rain, so I wore a lined sweatshirt jacket that was baking me in the morning sun. I tied it around my waist and continued with another spurt of jogging.

I walked a rapid pace for most of the remainder of the race, averaging almost 4.5 MPH. I clocked in at 46:30, and subtracting the 3:40 that was on the clock at the beginning, gives me a time of 42:50.

2001.02.13 REFLECTION ... As you can see from the cumulative loss chart on the main page, the weight loss continues at a reasonably steady pace. An average 2 lbs/week is near the top end of a normal, healthy loss rate, according to many. I've used mini-goals to try and maintain a high level of motivation. After all, although it is supposed to be a permanent lifestyle change, it does require monitoring, to stay on course. After 43 weeks, I'm closing in on 100 pounds. I'll have to think of some celebration for the grand occassion. 1-0-0 P-o-u-n-d-s. It is difficult to imagine how I carried all that extra weight for so many years. The only frustrating thing is that it will still take to mid-August to make goal. I might be able to speed it a little, but probably not much, considering vacations, etc. But, I am enjoying the benefit of replacing part of my wardrobe. I say part, because, believe it or not, I had saved shirts & slacks from my previous thinner days that fit now. I'm just passing through the end of my slacks, but I still have some 17 1/2 shirts that I can grow into. Who'da thunk!
