2001.02.25 JOGGING REVISITED ... OK .. the fat kid has just about reached the limit of what he can do for walking speed. According to my little SportBrain, I got as high as 4.5 MPH during the American Heart Association 5K. You can see the results here.

As I have mentioned in the past, my goal is to be able to jog a substantial distance - 5K being good for starters. Last night, I went out and walk/jogged my 1.5 mile circuit. The little sensor recorded that I did the course in 18 minutes, and 0.9 Miles of it was "running". It's a good beginning!
I'm JOGGING!!

This is a far cry from an attempt I made about 6 months ago at 285 lbs. I ran the course on two successive evenings, and after the second night, my knees were barking up a storm. Now, I have little problem with my knees - it seems to be lung capacity and efficient use of oxygen. Six months from now, when I'm at GOAL (gee that sounds neat!), I expect to be able to jog the course it one continuous run, TWICE - that would be about 5K...

Another mini-goal!!

2001.02.27 MOTIVATION ... I've been bogged down with so much work I don't know which way to turn. I have not had the urge to turn to food ... but I'm finding it hard to get motivated to log everything. However, I know that it is necessary to stay on track ... and it doesn't take much time.

Have YOU tried one of the food logging programs? I started by using the DietWatch food diary. I like that they have several of the common frozen dinners in their database. If something you try isn't there, usually there is a close equivalent. For example, if you have a Lean Cuisine dinner with chicken & rice, you could probably choose the Oriental Chicken, or the Fiesta Chicken and be pretty close. I think most of the Lean Cuisine dinners are around 250 calories, and chicken & rice is chicken & rice, no matter what you call it. The nutritional values will vary some, but probably not more than 10-15%. The trick is to find close equivalents and not get too bogged down searching for an EXACT match if it is not a common item.

If there is a food that you frequently enjoy, that is NOT in their database, you may add it with little effort. The other thing I like about DietWatch is the way the lookup starts immediately with a partial spelling, and narrows the choices as your spelling becomes more complete.

Now, if you are not on a DSL line, you might want to try out FitDay.com. They have a very similar database. Type in the type of food and have it look up the matches, select the correct one. The trick is to be somewhat generic on common items. There are fewer brand names. Like Dietwatch, you can also add foods not in their database. In addition, they maintain a list of your commonly selected items, that you can select from quickly and easily.

Finally, if you want to share your food and exercise log with others, you can make it available through a FitDay web page. Although the two services are different, they serve the same purpose - to allow you to log your food intake with minimal effort, and maintain a history. Dietwatch has discussion groups, Fitday has better exercise logging. They are both FREE to use.

I use them BOTH. I guess that is a testament to their ease of use. Otherwise I wouldn't enter my data twice each day!! Try one or both. It will assist you on your journey to lighter days!!

2001.03.01 MINI-GOALs ... One of the important parts of any weight loss program are the "tricks" that you use to stay motivated. Some people use rewards, while I like to use milestones. I like to set time goals for reaching a specific weight and attempt to meet them. As an example, my New Year's goal was to make 250 - a 35 lbs loss over 11 weeks. I didn't quite make it, but could hardly be disappointed with a 31 lbs loss!

I entered an unofficial challenge on the Dietwatch Weight Loss Board to get to 225 by 3/9. Not a chance in hell of making it, but it was a stretch goal. I also set a goal for myself to be between 220-225 100 days into the new year - that is 30-35 lbs loss in 14 weeks - and it looks doable. The reward for that little mini-goal will be better health, a new bathing suit, and a trip to Hawaii for a vacation!!

Speaking of milestones, I'm quickly coming up on two significant milestones .. the first will represent only 50 lbs to goal (at 235) and the second will be 100 POUNDS LOST (at 230).

It certainly has been interesting. It is also interesting how more people are noticing the weight loss I've accomplished, and asking "how I've done it". (For those of you that haven't checked out My Secret, please take a moment.)

Could YOU do it? You BETCHA!! Find a partner, make a committment, and give it a try. What have YOU got to lose??

2001.03.02 SOBERING REALITY ... Someone suggested visiting this site for a dose of sobering reality. It is a small applet that asks you questions, and then predicts your life expectancy, based on risk factors, etc. It is sponsored by Northwestern Life. Of course, it is just a crude approximation based on limited information. But it is enlightening...

2001.03.03 PLATEAU ?? ... I didn't weigh in today, partly because I had to get up early and go into work :O( Anyway, Vicki checked the scale and mentioned that she had barely lost anything this week, especially after working her butt off doing floor exercises, crunches, riding the stationary bike, and taking some long walks.

It isn't all bad .. She did her measurements and found that she was smaller. Anyway, I pointed out the blip in my weight chart and reminded her we are in it for the long haul. And besides, she has been recovering from a bad cold and upper respiratory thing ... She'll make it up next week ... I hope!

I had a good long walk yesterday afternoon .. about 5.5 miles. I felt pretty good afterwards. These long walks give me a chance to think about problems at work, projects around the house, etc. On this particular occassion I had plenty to think about .. since the batteries in my CD player crapped out about 15 minutes into the trek. (Memo to file: carry a spare pair of AA batteries, dufas!).

We're thinking of going to Denny's for their Slim Slam tomorrow. If the weather permits, we'll walk the 2.75 miles over. However rain is in the forecast ...

Have a great weekend. Check in tomorrow and see if I've hit the "50 lbs Left To Go" Milestone :O)

Thank You for Visiting!!
