2001.03.17 CLOSING ON THE CENTURY MARK ... As I Predicted, I missed hitting the 100 lbs lost mark this week, but NEXT WEEK FOR SURE!!

We went out for a 5.5 mile walk this morning, and I "discovered" how to walk faster. That may sound strange, but I've been busting my ass trying to walk as fast as I can, and I seemed to have max'ed out at about 4.3 MPH... So I have been trying jogging, and when the weather is bad, jogging in place while watching the tube.

When I walk, I am erect (that's standing tall), with my center of gravity about in the middle of my stride. I land firmly on my heel, and roll forward, pushing off slightly with the toes. I noticed that that as I stride forward to get a full stride, that my knee almost "locks" for a moment. You can only move so fast when using this technique.

Now when you run (jog), you tend to have your center of gravity a little forward, and your forward leg is bent slightly when landing on the heel. I tend to land not as firmly as when walking, and I get a push off from the toes.

Adapting this technique to a fast walk made a world of difference. I was able to go faster, using a shorter stride, and putting less effort into the walk. My heart rate monitor was not working quite right, but I felt a lot better after 5.5 miles this week, than I did after 3.1 miles in last week's walking race.

So, try to "run slow". Using a form similar to a run, pump your arms and go for it!

Spring is upon us!!

2001.03.18 HONEY-DOs ... Today, we chose to walk the 4.2 mile circuit, taking about 67 minutes to complete the effort. I developed a blister on a toe, which hurt a little during the dog's evening walk :O(

But Vicki had today mapped out for completion of the efforts started yesterday. Our city has a Spring cleanup campaign. If you can haul it to the curb, they will haul it away. So yesterday, we spent the afternoon cleaning out the garage. Today, we finished that job and then started on the yard. We accumulated a pretty large pile on the street, including an old washing machine that had died. It is interesting to see people drive by and pick up odds and ends from the street piles. The old saying, "One man's trash is another man's treasure", was never more apparent.

I ate small meals today, actually having four during the day. Breakfast was my usual instant oatmeal and an apple around 10am. Lunch was a skimpy chicken lunch meat sandwich and another apple. Midafternoon, I had a dannon light yogurt, a banana and a caramel apple corn cake. Dinner was a salad, 4 oz lean pork loin, a cup of brown rice, and some white dessert wine (left over from cooking the pork). The meals were small, but satisfying.

Yogurt has become a favorite of mine. It is tasty and provides calcium that I need and don't get enough of. The brand I like is the Dannon Light fruit yogurts. It is evidently made from non-fat milk and sweetened with aspartame (the stuff in EQUAL). I've tried low-fat yogurts that run 220+ calories for 8 oz, but the Dannon Light comes in at 120 calories for an 8 oz serving. It has become a staple for both Vicki & me.

2001.03.20 VISUALIZATION ... Visualization can be a power force in overcoming obstacles pertaining to weight loss. It can be used in a positive manner, reinforcing positive images. For instance, if you see yourself as fit & lean, you are more likely to work toward that attaining that image. It is the "Power of Positive Thinking"...

For some, visual images can also be a deterrent to engaging in harmful, or detrimental practices. For example, seeing a 5 pound tub of butter and thinking of it as 5 lbs of fat on your body, that you desparately want to rid yourself of, can be motivating. Or take a close look at a fatty 5 lbs package of ground beef. Feel it. That's probably closer to the "real thing" when it comes to the fat on your bod.

For some it might be the image of a fat person, in jeopardy of dying due to complications associated with weight, that will wake them to the reality of their situation.

Whatever it takes, be it positive and/or negative imagery, lock on to it and use it to your benefit in convincing yourself that it is imperative to change your lifestyle. Make a commitment to change, and then follow through.

Life really IS worth living!!

2001.03.22 BMI Milestone ... By golly, I almost forget to check. And its true - I've made another milestone! According to my Body Mass Index, I am no longer OBESE - I am just OVERWEIGHT!! My BMI is 29.7. Boy, am I glad. ::whew::

I was looking through the MayoClinic site and found some very interesting information on weight control. They discuss basics, and angles such as genetics, fasting and menopause effects. To check it out, go HERE.

They also have an excellent menu/recipe section HERE that will scale the amount of ingredients for 2, 4, or 6 servings, AND generate a shopping list for the item selected. It is definitely worth looking over.

Live Long & Prosper ...
