We used to go to tables that contained different height ranges for people and the corresponding healthy weight range. Using that technique, it was difficult to compare the relative fitness level of people of different heights/weights. The Body Mass Index provides just such a value that can be used for relative comparisons.

Your Body Mass Index (BMI) equals your weight (in kilograms) divided by your height (in meters) squared. A healthy range is considered about 18.5 to 25.0. When I started my weight loss journey last year, my BMI indicated that I was excessively obese at a level of 42. Today, 118 pounds lighter, I am nearing the "normal" range, with a current level of 27. At a weight of 185, the top of my target weight range, my BMI will be 23.8. At 175, the lower end of my target weight range, it will be 22.5.

2001.06.05 X-FILES... The fat kid has been all to good a friend to the X-Files (actually the X-Sizes). For most of my adult life I have been at least an XL, but mostly 2XL and 3XL. At my largest, I had a jacket that was a 4XL. Once in a while, I'd get clothes in a "tall" version - after all, I am 6'2". As I got larger, the number of stores carrying my size shrank - until I was getting most from the Big and Tall stores. A few of the department stores had BIG mens clothes - mostly jeans - that would fit.
Alas, those days are gone! It is hard to kick the old images. At the last couple of charity walks, I have mistakenly picked out shirts that were a size larger than I should have. About 4 months ago, I chose a 2XL. At Bloomsday, I chose an XL. I am currently fitting into a "Large" size shirt - right off the rack. I have a number of old 3XL T-Shirts that might make interesting nightshirts. Interestingly enough, as I grow smaller, the shirts have grown LONGER ...
Our daughter is off to China for a summer anthropological class trip. It is supposed to be a 5 week venture, but it is getting off to a rocky start. The flight departure had to be cancelled, due to faulty hatches somewhere on the plane. She finally got out of Washington D.C. today, and later called from Chicago. Their plane left late, was delayed, and could not leave Chicago because it would have put them in Beijing after curfew. So they will try again tomorrow...
Those of you visiting from Fred's page, WELCOME. There are a few pearls around this site if you check the links. One thing that Fred and I have in common, is that weight no longer rules our lives, we have taken control. He sees himself as a 185 lbs person, acts like a 185 lbs person, and is on his way to being a 185 lbs person. I have a different perspective, but the end goal is the same. I am perhaps a bit more focused on the journey, and I want it to end ASAP - so I kick it in the ass every once in a while to get the scale a movin'.
* * * * * We have registered for the Seattle Half-Marathon Walk (in November, 2001). Vicki and I are working up to the 13 mile distance. Sunday morning we walked 8.3 miles - not bad for a couple of 50+ old farts. Vicki also just broke the 100 lbs lost milestone on her weight loss program. We are both under 30 lbs from goal! It should be interesting when we go to her family reunion this August.
Thank You for Visiting!!
