2001.07.15 KEEP MOVIN' ... This morning Vicki went to join her sister in a local 10K walk. I opted out of this one, seeking to enjoy a rare "sleep-in Sunday". So she was up at 5:45 and out of the house by 6:30, off to her race. I managed to sleep another half an hour, before getting up, feeding the cats and then off for the dog's morning walk.

It was unusually chilly this morning, with temps probably in the mid 50's. This IS July 15th, right? Anyway, we went for our customary 1.4 mile walk, though the city streets and a public park. Although it was brisk, it was also invigorating. I guess that's what I enjoy about walking in the morning.

Following the "dog's walk", I slapped on my Tune Belt and set off for a planned 5.5 Mile walk. I chose Not to walk the river levee, instead walking along a new construction site, to check out the latest progress. This site is probably at least 6 square city blocks, which will eventually contain apartments, a strip mall, a large grocery store, and who knows what-all... Anyway, the land is cleared, except for some large trees that they managed to save. It appears as though grading is starting, for the layout of streets, etc.

In a way, I'm sorry to see the development continue. It represents part of a large circuit that I use for my weekend walks, where I can travel up to 2.5 miles continuously, without getting held up by any busy intersections. It has been a nice bonus during the past year while we have been walking the pounds off!

About 45 minutes into "my Walk", I reached a decision point - continue toward home (about another 40 minutes), or turn and make the loop around the Great America Amusement Park. The morning was overcast and cool, and I was feeling pretty good, so I went for it! It added about another 3 miles to the total distance walked.

The chart for SportBrain shows my activity in steps/minute over the morning walk. For me, 120 steps/minute equates to about 4 mph. So, by keepin'a movin', I actually put in more than Vicki's 10K - almost 10 miles, or 16 kilometers- between the two walks. I was spent at the end, but had a feeling of accomplishment, knowing I was a fraction closer to my ultimate weight goal.

2001.07.18 SPORTBRAIN SHUTDOWN ... Evidently, Sportbrain has run into funding problems and is in receivership. As a result they are seeking out buyers and, to conserve cash, have laid off all employees. Last night, I read the following post on their site:

Site shut down

I've been told to shut the site down when I return from vacation. I will be meeting with Sherwood partners about the shut down Wednesday afternoon. Consider this your early warning. Phone uploads will most likely be shut off Thursday (possibly late Wednesday afternoon). The web pages, including the forums, will remain up for a number of days. Possibly through early next week.

None of the prospective buyers are willing to fund the site before they purchase. I'm sorry to see this all go away. It does NOT mean that SportBrain won't come back. PLEASE, PLEASE update your profile email address (SportBrain AND the forums) so we can email you if things come back.

It has been great serving you all and even better getting to know you. Please spread the word so that others aren't too surprised.

Bob
SportBrain

SportBrain has been one of the neatest devices that I have seen in many, many years. It is a shame that they have run into these problems. I, like many other users, hope that they are successful in finding a "white knight".

Thank You for Visiting!!
