2001.09.22 FEELING HUNGRY ... Lately, I've been getting a little hungry around late afternoon. I've started taking a protein bar to work, to eat as an afternoon snack. This seems to have taken care of the "problem", and it is better for me than snacking on chips, cookies or other junk from the vending machines.

Many people profess that to optimize your weight loss, it is better to keep the metabolic furnace stoked at a relatively constant level, by eating smaller meals more frequently. Bill Phillips, in his Body for Life, recommends eating six times a day. I'm not sure that I can work that into my schedule, but it is clear that I might be heading for more than the standard three squares a day.

The two pound weight loss this week was nice, but I could almost tell that there would be some significant movement on the scale. My activity level has stayed pretty constant over the past several months, walking an average of 5 miles/day, with some jogging mixed in. As I get lighter, it is getting a little easier. As always, I think that it is enormously helpful to have your "significant other" not only support your efforts, but actually joining in. Vicki has also lost OVER 100 lbs and is also very dedicated to maintaining this new lifestyle. It certainly makes it a lot easier as we provide mutual support.

Our path to success started with some very simple steps (literally), about a year and a half ago. Did we ever imagine that we would be where we are today? You betcha! Once we were on our way for a few months, the weight losses became somewhat predictable. There were some slow weeks in the beginning, before we learned the advantages of a regular exercise regimen. However, once we started exercising DAILY, the losses became much more consistent.

That's really all there is to it. And it starts with one simple step ...
