INTRODUCTION - SELECTION OF A DOMAIN NAME AND SECURITY ISSUES

The best domain name is one which states the product or services one wishes to advertise on the Net. Unless you have a particular brand name, no one will remember who you are; but they will know the type of product or service they are seeking when addressing a search query at major search engines and directories.

And then there's the issue of security of information at domain name registries since almost all domain name registries are open to public viewing. And it's a far gone conclusion that once your domain name is registered, your website's email address will likely be open to people sending SPAM ("Sending People Anonymous Mail"). These "spammers" almost invariably find more information about you via your domain name and then can either bombard your email with junk solicitations or even go so far as to actually call you at your private telephone number. Even a disgruntled customer can unexpectantly "drop-in" to your home or apartment. To avoid being open to anyone who happens to visit a domain name registry in search of discovering the owner of a particular domain name, you should initially take some simple precautions to alter the original domain name registry information to preserve your privacy to reflect:

1. Use of a P.O. box address or the nearest post office address servicing your address instead of your actual home/apartment address. The use of an address of the nearest U.S. Post Office servicing your area is sufficient and considering the fact that future renewal notifications routinely appear as an email reminder (rather than by a separate piece of regular mail). And if this is not possible, make sure to remove any reference to the apartment, studio or unit number.

2. Use of a pager number (but never a cell phone number) in place of a regular telephone number. And, of course, never publish an unlisted private telephone number which someone will in fact use to call you in the middle of the night.

3. Use of a third-party email service such as yahoo.com instead of your personal email address. And never list your home cable or ISP email address. Let the spammers hit the third-party email in-box; you can't be bothered setting up any more mail filters in their wake.

4. And finally, for Technical Contact/Support (assuming that you use mydomain.com's services) use: DNS (first name); Support (last name); Namezero.com, Inc. (organization); P.O. Box 637 (address); Los Gatos (city); CA (state) 95031 (zip); U.S. (country); 604-434-5931 (telephone); and, support@namezero.com (email).

FIRST STEP - INITIAL REGISTRATION OF DOMAIN NAME AT GODADDY.COM OR,

Go to www.godaddy.com.  Select button "I would like to park this domain at GoDaddy Software for FREE." Do not select any other option. Have a credit card in hand and subscribe to at least a two-year reservation for your domain name.  Complete all steps thru Check-Out and printout the receipt notification. Sign in at MY Account; select the domain name(s) and at "Name Server Information (Click here to modify)" fill-in the registry form  and provide as the name server info: "ns1.mydomain.com" as the Primary Server; "ns2.mydomain.com" as the Secondary Server; "ns3.mydomain.com" as the Third Server and "ns4.mydomain.com" as the Fourth Server. When applying for domain names at other than godaddy.com's registry, refer to the following examples:

Primary Server:
Name: NS1.MYDOMAIN.COM

Secondary Server:
Name: NS2.MYDOMAIN.COM

Third Server:

Name: NS3.MYDOMAIN.COM

Fourth Server:

Name: NS4.MYDOMAIN.COM Then hit "LOG OUT" when finished.

MyDomain's Primary Name Server address MUST be listed as the first server for your domains. Mydomain.com strongly advise that you use all MyDomain Secondary Servers exactly as they appear above, however, if your registry only accepts one or two Secondary Servers this will be adequate. Review the following article which provide more details.

DOMAIN NAME TRANSFERS FROM A CURRENT REGISTRAR (I.E., NETWORK SOLUTIONS) TO GODADDY.COM

Select this link, read the directions and complete the necessary registrar transfer forms [either in word or text].

SECOND STEP - BECOME A MEMBER AT  MYDOMAIN.COM

Go to www.mydomain.com and register as a new Member. Submit an email address [preferably a third-party mail service, i.e., Yahoo, Netscape, etc.] and provide a password.

Go back to the main Quick Start Menu and beginning with paragraph 2, select the "Add Domains" link and select then Stealth Redirection, email setup, etc. as outlined in the Quick Start instructions.

In about 4-6 calendar days, you will notice (after logging back on) at your mydomain Member Area that  a new domain appears marked as "1."  Once this occurs, you can then begin setting up an "Under Construction" page or even go so far as to select the "stealth forwarding" option and complete the step-by-step procedure to redirect [with full masking] a domain name to your homepage. Here's the Stealth Forwarding Process to link up your present homepage to your new domain name: At mydomain.com, login email+password, go to My Domain List and select [a] Domain Name. At Summary, select Web Settings/Edit Web Settings, and at the upper right hand corner of this menu, click on "Stealth Forwarding" then at URL to Forward to: [type in] http://www.[homepage URL]. At Properties for Domain Name: (i) select the "no" bullet for Pass Subdirectories; (ii) complete entries for Title [include location of your goods or services], Keywords [separated by a comma with no space after each comma], and Description [omit self-serving phrases as "the best in town, etc."]; (iii) then hit Continue, Confirm Changes, and (iv) finally, Log-Out.

COMMON REASONS FOR DELAY

Your domain move may be delayed or not completed if you have placed a password on the domain, or if you owe fees to either the registrar hosting the domain or the company presently serving it. Contact these companies directly if you believe they may be delaying your move. We regret that we cannot access information on exactly why a specific move may be delayed.

MOVE COMPLETION

When the registrar has added our name server information any mydomain features you have set for your domain name will be activated and you will receive an email from mydomain network.

These instructions are also available in the SUPPORT section of the mydomain Member Area.

Please note that there has been a recent redesign of the whole website of MyDomain.com and it is much easier than ever to accomplish a transfer, sign-on as a new member or to sign-in new domain name(s) to an already existing account. So the earlier above instructions may prove to be incorrect when navigating on this newly revised website. Good luck!!
