5/19-21/95 - Sam Boyd Silver Bowl- UNLV - Las Vegas, NV
As I was getting ready to leave for what would be, unbeknownst to me, my last Dead shows, the call came at 7:00 a.m. that BT has left this world of ours. I set out on the road with my kids, then four and six years old. It was a grueling trip with many tears and very hot weather through the desert, which my car did not like!!! We arrived, just outside of town, and checked into the hotel. Kids in arms, back then, there was not much reason to stay right in the heart of town. We swam and slept and headed to the Bowl early the next day....we were vending. I swore that last year I would never attend or vend at another Vegas show in June because of the weather. It was May and the weather SHOULD have been bearable, but they had the biggest heat wave this particular weekend.....breaking temperature records....and making for a very hot time vending in the lot.
Dave Matthews Band opened these shows.....I have no recollection of that whatsoever. I find that truly bizarre. As I walked around inside I found so many young kids talking, criticizing the music and the show.....I walked....I sat....I listened to what people were saying. I recall a computer survey at the venue....probably some of the last data collected about the Dead and their fans.
The heat was so much that I remember little more from the shows than the Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds encore. We had those pop up hats that are great for the sun that we were selling and the kids were rolling them down the hill stage right in the back of the stands. Having been here many times before and explored many sound spaces....this was the best sound in the house. Old Dead Head trick....wander round and find the best sound.....you never know where that might be.
