The Year 2398

Imagine this, if you will......it's the year 2398 and you're walking toward the San Francisco Opera House. There is a crowd milling about outside. The women are in evening gowns and the men in tuxedos. There are waiters carrying trays filled with glasses of champagne.  The glasses are taken from the trays as the waiters pass through the crowd. There is a definite buzz about the crowd. It's the opening night at the San Francisco Symphony. Michael Tilson Thomas, VI is the conductor tonight and the program consists solely of the music of the Grateful Dead.

The lights in the Lobby begin to flash on and off and the crowd starts filtering inside as the waiters collect the glasses. A liquid light show decorates all of the walls and ceilings with rainbows of lights and lasers. The audience is seated. The crowd can be heard whispering throughout. Silence falls as the orchestra rises from the floor and the lights come up on the stage. The tuning of instruments is heard and the gentleman in front of me whispers "I heard a copy of an audience recording of the Dead once that had almost five minutes of instrument tuning."  The show to be performed this evening is June 4, 1978 - University of California - Santa Barbara.  The gentleman turns to his friend once again and asks: "I wonder how they're going to recreate the sounds of the BMW 900 that was on stage for Not Fade Away?"  His friend responds: "I wonder who is going to wear the ware wolf mask!"
