Published on March 24, 1958, at 30 shillings, in an edition of 3,000 copies.
Note: While the contents of the British and American editions are the same, the British edition lists additional section titles throughout the text for Part Two. In the American editions, simple numerals are used throughout to identify the different sections, with a single page at the end functioning as a table of contents titled "REFERENCE TABLE FOR THE PROCEEDING POTPOURRI."
Photographs in the British Edition are generally full page size, whereas in the First Edition they are usually half page.
A105d 1959 SECOND NEW DIRECTIONS EDITION
Bright orange cloth boards. Gray illustrated dust jacket with photograph of Big Sur coastline and detail of "The Millennium" by Hieronymus Bosch
Published in 1959, at $6.50.
Note: This Second Edition is indistinguishable from the first, in terms of binding, with both having bright orange cloths boards. What is different; however, is the dust jacket, where the notation "Second Printing" appears on the bottom front flap.
The dust jacket of this edition advertises the New Directions paperback edition of The Colossus of Maroussi, a title that was published on June 18, 1958. This edition could have been bound at any time between then and the first paperback edition of Big Sur and The Oranges of Hieronymus Bosch, which occurred on April 27, 1964. New Direction has no records indicating a more specific date.

Note: This edition is identical to the First British Edition except for the following: a price increase noted on the dust jacket from 30 to 42 shillings; the dust jacket of the Second Edition has blurbs by John Wain, Kenneth Allsop, Kenneth Young and John Cowper Powys while the First Edition contains a full publisher's statement about the book; the addition of "Ltd" appears on the colophon page after "The Windmill Press," something that was absent on the First British Edition; and the lettering on the spine is yellow, as contrasted to the light copper of the First British Edition.
