A29 1943 FIRST CARREFOUR EXPANDED VOLUME ONE EDITION
Soft off-white cardboard
Published in July 1943.
Notes: This 1943 edition of Hamlet contains a number of letters between pages 47 and 218 that were omitted from the 1939 Hamlet [A22a]. They are: "Nov. 19, 1935," "Nov. 21, 1935," "Nov. 20, 1935," "Nov. 23, 1935," "Nov. 24, 1935," "Nov. 26, 1935," "Dec. 14, 1935," and "Dec. 15, 1935." This edition does not include the undated letter that was used as an Appendix to the 1939 Hamlet.
A29.1 1943 Boxed Set
Volume 1 of the Henry Miller/Michael Fraenkel correspondence called Hamlet was published in 1939, with Volume II being published in 1941. In 1943 an expanded Edition of Volume I was published. In addition to selling these books individually, a number of Volume II books and the expanded Volume I were issued as a set in a slipcase made of thin cardboard covered with black paper. The box is unlettered. What distinguished copies issued as a set, versus those sold individually, is the presence of the roman numerals I and II appearing in black ink on their respective spines. In all other ways they appear identical with those copies sold separately. Total number of copies sold as a set not determined. Information from Phil Ciapponi, Chloe's Books.

A135c 1962 VARIANT FIRST COMBINED EDITION
Soft, sand colored cardboard. Left side of book has four holes punched through the pages with a decorative blue ribbon tie lacing them. The ribbons are crossed laced on the spine.
Later binding of First Edition sheets.
Note: This variant is identical to A135b except it has a change of address on the front wrapper, [though not on the title page]. The address [27 Letterstone Road, London S.W.6] has been typed, not printed, on matching paper and glued over the address which appeared on the First Edition. Michael Hargraves, editor of Henry Miller's Hamlet Letters [A256a] notes that the Letterstone Road address was where Daphné Fraenkel lived until her death, in January 1991.
A135d 1962 FIRST COMBINED LIMITED EDITION
Soft, sand colored cardboard. Left side of book has four holes punched through the pages with a decorative black ribbon tie lacing them. Black ribbon tie on the spine is laced in such a way as to create a series of squares.
Later binding of First Edition sheets.
Note: This Limited Issue has labels on the spine, a black ribbon tie laced to create squares as opposed to the diagonals of the First Edition, an additional sheet bound in which lists forthcoming titles to be published by Carrefour Press, and was signed by Daphné Fraenkel. Only 4 copies of this Limited Issue were created. While not seen, its existence was made known to us by Michael Harris, designer of this Limited Issue and Carrefour archivist. This entry is correctly placed and followed both the red and blue tie books described above.
A135e 1962 VARIANT FIRST COMBINED EDITION
Later binding of First Edition sheets.
Note: This book follows the Limited Issue [A135d] but lacks the page of fourthcoming titles and Daphné Fraenkel's signature.
