Into the Night Life

A60a 1947 FIRST EDITION

Blue silk screen cloth boards with oblong 1 3/16 inch red felt patch glued to the front board and abstract serigraph illustration in bluish-green, white and black. Dark blue paper covered cardboard publisher's slipcase
Published in April 1947, at $100, in an edition oF 173 copies.
Note: The copyright page [12] notes that this edition was limited to 800 copies, however, this is in error. 800 sets of sheets were printed in 1947, along with the silk screen blue cloth used for the binding. 173 copies were bound, enclosed in slipcases and put on sale in April 1947, with the remaining sheets stored in Miller's closet.

A60b 1971 SECOND EDITION / LATER BINDING OF FIRST EDITION SHEETS

Published in an edition of 20-25 copies.
Note: This variant is one of ten copies inspected with limitation numbers in the 190's, which give evidence of having been bound at a later time. This variant differs from A60a in several respects: it lacks the lettering on the spine; was wrapped in the binder's original heavyweight brown and black mottled paper; has three binding strips extending from the spine area onto the front and back boards verses five for the First Edition; and has a very shallow "valley" between both the front and back boards and their respective free end papers [for A60a, this "valley" is deep and pronounced]. This variant, along with 9 other identical copies, were purchased directly from Miller by art collector Joe Erdelac in July 1973, though actual date of binding is thought to have occurred 2 years been prior to this time. The number of copies so bound is far smaller than either A60a or A60c, and numbers no more than 20-25 copies.
When Into the Night Life was originally put on sale, an un-known number of copies were available in loose leaf form [at $80], as well as individual sheets of the printed text alone [$5], and also some separate double page illustration [$10]. During 1971 Miller corresponded with Jon Webb about binding some of these loose sheets. Webb died a few months later, but their exchange of information might have spurred Miller to have some sheets bound on his own.

A60c 1977 THIRD EDITION / LATER BINDING OF FIRST EDITION SHEETS

Published in 1977, in an edition of 190 copies.
Note: Approximately 400 of the original 600 sets of sheets stored in Miller's closet were destroyed by "worms" [also described by Miller as "rats and fungus"]. In 1977 190 complete sets were salvaged and bound using the original 1947 cloth covers but, as with A60b, lacking the lettering on the spine. Slipcases were made for this later binding [A60c] of a "bluish-green" cloth. What sets this later binding apart from A60a and A60b, is the presence of small "worm-holes" existing on approximately 20 percent of the pages, and ranging in size from that of the head of a pin, to some 1/16 x 1/3 inch. While we cannot say that each of these these 190 copies had worm holes, the majority appears to have some damage. As with A60a, and A60b, both Miller's and Schatz's signature appears on the limitation page. Copies of this later binding are numbered in the low 200's to the upper 300's.

A60d 1977 FOURTH EDITION / BOXED SET OF FIRST EDITION SHEETS

Published in 1977, in an edition of 10 copies.
Note: Of 200 sets of sheets determined to be salvageable, 190 were bound as described in A60c. A publicity announcement from the Coast Gallery notes: "Ten unbound copies are being specially boxed by Schatz in Jerusalem and three were displayed at the Coast Gallery "Henry Miller Returns to Big Sur" Exhibit at the Tel Aviv International Art Fair, April 13-20, 1978." This boxed variant was not seen.

A61a 1947 Text Only Version FIRST EDITION

Published in April 1947, at $75.00, in an edition of 14 copies.
Note: "One of 14 numbered copies signed by Miller on a colophon page done entirely in his hand. This edition consists of serigraph reproductions of the text of the book alone. Miller notes in his hand-written colophon that `This special edition was made for the pleasure of those friends who appreciate my "holographic idiosyncrasies".' The book is an inch wider and two taller than its illustrated counterpart, printed entirely on heavy white rather than various colored papers, and bound in plain beige cloth rather than the blue cloth of the illustrated issue. Both have the same stamping on the spine. It should be noted that this special issue is not simply the regular issue without illustrations. Not only is it a different size and printed on different paper, but the text appears on the rectos of the sheets only and, in the absence of illustrations, is centered on the page. It is, as Miller indicates, a special creation in its own right." Issued in a red cloth slipcase.

A61b 1947 Text Only VARIANT FIRST EDITION

Note: This variant consists of the First Edition unbound sheets.

A61c 1947 Text Only VARIANT FIRST EDITION

Published in April 1947, at $50, in an edition of 2 copies.
Note: Silk screen text of First Edition over newspaper pages. Issued in portfolio.
