Obscenity and the Law of Reflection
A43a 1945 FIRST ALICAT EDITION
Light blue-gray semi-soft cardboard
Published in June 1945, at $1.00, in an edition of 750 copies.
Note: This essay written expressly for Miller's friend, Huntington Cairns.
A43b 1950 FIRST CONFESSION PRESS EDITION
White wrappers
Published in 1950.
Note: Although "PARIS" is stated on the front wrapper, this item was published in the United States, most likely New York City. 1000 is the stated limitation on page [2]; however, whether this is accurate, is questionable. Jay Gertzman, who has conducted research on Samuel Roth, believes it was Roth who published this unauthorized edition of Miller's work. Mr. Gertzman writes that he has seen this item "advertised in one of his [Roth's] almost infinite number of mail order circulars, and was offered free with an order of a certain amount from his lists of books and magazines in the late 40's and early 1950's."
Although texturally a photo-offset from the First Edition, there is a printing error which occurs on this Second Edition that was not on the First Edition. Specifically, on the first line of p. 17 of two copies inspected, the second and third letter of "Spiritual" is not seen and in its place, a small circle with a dash inside it.
A43d 1963 KENTUCKY LAW JOURNAL (offprint)
Blue wrappers
Published in 1963.
Note: Pages from the Journal have been stapled in a printed blue wrappers.
A43c 1985 SECOND CONFESSION PRESS EDITION
Texturally and in outward appearance, this later unauthorized edition seems identical to the Second Edition, however some variances are noted: leave measurement is slighty larger, no printing error occurs on page 17 and the overall quality of printing is less sharp and especially noticeable on the photograph of Miller which appears somewhat grainy. This edition is produced on a lighter weight white paper and on an accurate scale, weighs 1.1 ounce, verses the 1.3 ounce of the Second Edition. Packs of 10 copies each of this edition were being offered for sale by an unnamed person, to antiquarian book dealers in 1985.
